Trump had a more stable deal about wrapped up, including behind the scenes commitments to making sure the Taliban behaved— at least for a decent interval. Biden came in and unravelled it all with his bungling incompetence.

If only we had spent just a few trillion dollars more and another few decades.

You cannot change an impoverished culture deeply rooted in the values and practices of the 9th century by force of arms. As Obama stated these people cling to their religion and guns. The US had the necessity to hunt down Bin Laden after 9/11. The Taliban were about to turn him over because he “violated their hospitality” but the US invaded when they delayed. Turned out he soon left Afghanistan and found refuge in Pakistan, our great ally. The US became involved in a quagmire of futile nation building squandering blood , treasure and debilitating itself politically and culturally. Would have been far better to send the Afghans 20,000,000 computers with an unbreakable link to the internet than the troops and money.

All these colonies where somebody drew lines that made sense for the empire; not so much for the people living there. Ideally, those lines would simply get re-drawn so that people who haven’t been mortal enemies for 1,000 years aren’t forced to share power in a government or kill each other for control.

Wait? What ..

Oh, for a second I thought you were talking about Red States and Blue States! LOL.

You know, you’re not all that far off. It’s scary how much we’re beginning to resemble Afghanistan and places like that in terms of our growing tribalism. If we don’t find a way to deescalate, more violence is all but inevitable.

Anyone wishing for that to happen hasn’t seen real violence before and doesn’t understand what it would do to our neighborhoods, our families, our friends, and our children. Civil wars are devastating. One here would destroy a century of economic growth in a year or two.

This fiasco in Afganistna as well as the Vietnam War fiasco can be laid at the feet of every spineless, gutless political hack whose been in political office. They don’t give a damn about anything other than themselves, the acquisition of more and more power, and the theft of as much money as they can acquire while screwing the American people. These are the same bastards, at every level of government, who profess to care about those dying of Covid. They don’t give a damn about your getting Covid any more than they did about all the military treasure they sent off to die for nothing! And, I might add, that includes those who didn’t die, but came home with wounds, physical and mental, that last the rest of their lives. Then we can discuss those who committed suicide because of being sent into these hell holes to fight for what. Lay it at the feet of the self-serving, amoral political industrial complex and the military industrial complex.

Exactly; then too, Bush’s idiotic incursion into Iraq2 and we’re still there as well.

Anyone who could left Afghanistan.....what’s left are those willing to be compliant to the Taliban...or will be forced to. End of story.

I recall a missionary who stated that going into “tribal” places to change and modernize these people isn’t working. In most cases they end up accepting aide forever.

This fiasco is all on George W. Bush.

Everyone knew this would happen as soon as the US pulled out. We've been saying as much since before we went in. Anyone says they didn't know this was going to happen is lying. It's an acceptable result of our pullout.

1) Afghanistan had 20 years of training and the opportunity to build an army willing to fight against the Taliban. They failed in that.

2) 20 more years wouldn’t change a damn thing.

3) GW’s “nation building” its now shown to be an utter failure. The only thing that would work WHEN we are attacked from there again is to turn it into a smoldering ruin that glows slightly at night.

4) Don’t forget the real reason the Taliban survived and rebuilt...ISLAM.

Biden wants the US to lose and lose badly. Perhaps he’ll blame Bush.

I disagree.
Please read “Charlie Wilson's War”.
The movie was pretty good too.

Arming the Afghan resistance and defeating the Soviets was instrumental in the eventual fall of the Soviet Union.
Afghanistan was the first defeat for the USSR. It was all downhill after that.

Also, Charlie Wilson and the CIA agent did it for cheap money.
When the Afghans got stinger shoulder fired missals and started bringing down Soviet helicopters it demoralized the USSR and led to their defeat.

Yeah, and they’ll rear up and bite us all in the ass some time in the future at this rate. If they were smart, the CIA would infiltrate the Taliban and stir up internecine strife so the organization would devour itself. But if they were smart they would have done that before 9/11/01 to Al Qaeda AND the Taliban. Unlikely that Mossad is that smart, either. FUBAR and out.

IMO, within the next 20 years China will be the first successful Afghan invader since Genghis Khan. Instead of trying to win hearts and minds or placate the population for trade they will just annihilate everyone, keep some slaves and exploit the mineral wealth back to the homeland.

The CCP has the luxury of not caring too much whether or not Afghan girls are able go to school. So they don't even have to annihilate anyone - they'll just pay off the Taliban to operate as "security" under PLA direction and start mining.

That's why the big China/Taliban press conference happened the other day - everybody involved is preparing to get rich.
