The police chief of Southampton Village will receive a whopping sum of nearly $750,000 in unused time when he leaves his post in September, a report said.

The heft payout to Chief Thomas Cummings, 57 takes into account unused sick days, vacation and other time — and was established in his 2016 contract, Newsday reported, citing documents obtained in a Freedom of Information Law request.

His scheduled Sept. 10 departure from the police department was approved unanimously by the village board on July 20, the newspaper reported.

Cummings, whose 2020 salary was $248,342, his spouse and other dependents will get medical and dental benefits for the rest of his life.

The purpose of government is to be a pyramid scheme with professional affirmative action bureaucrats/educrats at the top.

The purpose of the rest of us is to funnel money to them.

A nation of government-sanctioned thieves vs us peasants.

He probably also gets a massive pension similar to his $248,342 salary.

I love government jobs….

Sick time is vacation time.
You can carry over all of your vacation time. For years.
You get a bunch of holidays you can carry over.

This stuff doesn’t fly in the real world.

Don’t blame the cop. The Town approved his contract and those officials were voted in by the citizens.

You will get the government you deserve.

RE: Long Island police chief to get massive $750K payout upon retirement

well, no wonder the traffic cops in Long Island are working double time to catch violators and they’ve increased the number of traffic cameras all over the county...

Add to these the five figure property taxes Long Islanders pay...

They need the revenue to pay for their fat retirement.

They likely count “sick days” as days that are “earned” and you are “owed” them if you don’t take them.

At my longest employer, years ago, we made it very clear, that should the person be sick, we grant up to 12 days for sick days but that does not mean the employee is “owed” those days. They are granted, as paid days, when they are sick and need to stay home. They didn’t get any “accumulated” sick days at all, if they happen to not need any or all of the 12 possible “sick days”.

We also made it clear that we could grant more than 12 paid sick days, depending on circumstances and at our discretion.

The top officers also made it clear that everyone needed to take their vacation days, that managers and supervisors needed to see to it that that happened but that no one was allowed to carry over, to accumulate, vacation days they had not taken the previous year. You either took them or you lost them. Usually it was officers and managers most often, not staff, that failed to take all their vacation days. I know, I was one of them. My pension benefit from that outfit would have been greater if I too could have “cashed in” on “unused sick days” and “unused vacation days”. I don’t complain about it too much, because I always thought that company’s policies on sick days and vacation days was right. Those possible paid days while not working were fine, but not owed if not used.

People ask "why would anyone want to be a cop in this environment?"

This. You just need to get to the finish line. It's also why good cops look the other way when bad ones are doing things. Protecting the retirement.

Granted this is way more than the average beat cop gets as a payout but that pension they get is pretty nice.

The Police Chief is a political appointed position…..The politicians protect their own…..

Regular Cops don’t get that type of payment …..

Yes,the politicians involved can certainly be seen as un-indicted co-conspirators.
