Massachusetts Teachers Association calls state decision to encourage, but not require, masking in schools ‘reckless’

Posted on 07/30/2021 1:56:31 PM PDT by matt04

Educators unions in Massachusetts are urging officials to change course on mask-wearing in schools after state officials on Friday said the prevention effort will be encouraged but not required.

In guidance released Friday, the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education strongly encouraged, but did not require, unvaccinated students in grades K-12 or school staff to wear masks when inside school buildings this fall.

Massachusetts Teachers Association President Merrie Najimy called it a “reckless decision.”

“The guidance issued today by Governor Charlie Baker’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is no guidance at all. Rather than adopt a plan in line with the guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics, DESE is essentially signaling that students, educators and families should not take seriously the reality of the alarming rise in the number of cases of COVID-19,” Najimy said in a statement.

...

The MTA said there is time before the academic year for DESE to reverse course. The union called on school districts to require universal masking.

AFT Massachusetts President Beth Kontos said the state should listen to health experts like the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“If DESE continues to reject public health guidance and fails to act, local school committees need to step up and require universal mask wearing to keep us all safe and to maximize the likelihood of schools staying open this school year,” Kontos said.

Cases, cases, cases. Kids have been mask less in stores, playgrounds/parks, malls, etc. all summer acting like normal and no mass death, hospitalizations, etc.

The unions got a taste of power and now don't wnat to let go. They would probably find soem reaosn to keep masks on all year and into next.

Sorry, one case of the Coof in all of MA, gotta mask up again.

Teachers need to be replaced with people that do not have education degrees. Teacher unions need to be eliminated.

One wonders how a certain Samuel Adams would react if his British state of Massachusetts had required wearing masks.

So now teachers' unions are presuming to make medical decisions for their students.

Teachers' unions need to be broken, and union teachers need to have their credentials revoked..

There is ZERO evidence masks are effective in stopping the virus.

The proof is that was Dr. Fauci's first statement on the subject, before it became politicized.

Thus, we must conclude this is all about power and control and nothing to do with health and science.

Fire them all and get parents into the classrooms who will do a better job. Like Reagan fired the air traffic controllers!

Based on my experience with public school teachers, I could have told you that if you pay teachers to work from home for a year, they will all gain at least 20 pounds and it will be darn near impossible to get them to come back to work again.

Best teacher I had in HS was a guy that left private industry to do it. Didn’t understand it at the time.

Allowing a “Teachers’ Association” to exist is reckless and endangering.

It’s gone full circle. It was the case curve, then the desk curve. Then both of them dried up and they couldn’t use that as an excuse, now we’re back to cases.

Exactly the type of people that should be teaching. Education degrees today equate to leftist indoctrination. Additionally, there is zero rigor compared to "real" degrees, particularly in mathematics and sciences.
