TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis doubled down Thursday on his opposition to mask mandates for public-school students during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying he would call for a special legislative session if the federal government moves toward requiring masks in schools.
“There’s been talk about potentially people advocating at the federal level, imposing compulsory masks on kids,” DeSantis said. “We’re not doing that in Florida, OK? We need our kids to breathe.”
DeSantis made the remarks while in Fort Pierce for a ceremonial bill signing with House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor. DeSantis said he and Sprowls would back a special session if the federal government requires masks in schools, adding that Florida districts will keep masks optional for students.
“As of right now, all the school districts are going in that direction. But there is going to be, it looks like, a campaign from Washington to try to change that. I’ve talked to Chris Sprowls, if we need to bring (lawmakers) back in to be able to do something from the legislative perspective, he’s all in,” DeSantis said.
The comments came as Florida and other parts of the country are seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, at least in part because of the dangerous delta variant of the coronavirus.
DeSantis on Wednesday endorsed Floridians getting vaccinated against COVID-19, but children younger than 12 remain ineligible for the shots. Last year, DeSantis pushed schools to reopen for in-person learning amid the pandemic.

Good for him. The WH came out with an attack on Florida and Texas today, so I hope he holds firm.
Nationwide, 335 of the roughly 600,000 people who have died from COVID-19 were under 18, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
And we do not know if COVID was the cause or just present
But get the jab. The jab is good.
The WH is also attacking FL by sending illegal aliens to the state.
None of the comments after the article support the governor. Sad.
Democrats are feeling their totalitarian oats now. Stealing an election in a brazen manner will do that. They think they can dictate whatever they want now.
If I could tell Gov DeSantis one thing, it is that he and the legislature need to pass a law that forbids ANY county, city, municipality in FL from mandating masks. Even though masks were not required during the last hysteria, that didn’t mean that the local pols didn’t pass their own. The cities of Tampa, Clearwater and St. Pete for example, then the counties of Hillsboro and Pinellas followed suit. These local dictators need to be stripped of that power too.
As far as I know the CDC is proposing guidance on this issue. Despite CDC belief to the contrary guidance does not have the same force of law of either legislation or regulations. It’s called guidance for a reason and is not a mandate.
Jacksonville did too - the mayor is a RINO who hates DeSantis.
School mask mandates?!
DeSantis, you know what it used to say on the boxes of disposable muzzles we bought (before the language was later removed): NOT FOR USE IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS.
Think about that for a moment, Gov.
Why would that be, eh?
Because using a disposable facemask to protect against an airborne respiratory virus is like using chicken wire to keep out mosquitos...?
CoupFlu has NEVER been about public health.
They aren’t masks. They’re muzzles.

I like this man, he fights.

The jabs seems pretty harmless to my 7 close family members ranging in age from 27-81. We all had 2 jabs in Feb-March-April period, and not a single issue with anyone.
I was at Sunset Grille on Wednesday having my favorite meal of grilled shrimp and cheesy fries & collard greens.
There were at least 70 customers there but not one person was wearing a mask. Which is OK by me, but could spread covid again. I heard from a nurse working in Flagler hospital complex that covid patients have spiked there in last few days.
