How Trump can win again: Become the calm, moderate candidate (good piece!)
thehill.com ^ | 7/16/21 | Conrad Black

The political scene is evolving so quickly that I presume to offer some advice to President Trump: He can now win in 2024 by being the potential candidate of calm and moderation.

The Democrats have become a Babel of contending extremists, suddenly and implausibly blaming the Republicans for defunding police forces and miraculously discovering the virtues of voter identification, after having denounced it for six months as the resurrection of Jim Crow. The utter moral bankruptcy of many elected Democrats was captured in the Texas state legislators fleeing the state in private planes, excitedly taking selfies of themselves unmasked and grinning, to avoid being compelled by law to make a quorum in the state legislature and pass judgment on a voting reform measure.

Things are not altogether more settled on the other side, however. There are a number of prominent Republicans who are clearly qualified to be president, including Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida and former Vice President Mike Pence. Yet Trump effortlessly prevailed over both of them and every other listed contender in a recent CPAC poll of potential candidates for president in 2024. The uncharacteristically incautious comments of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that, in effect, the dreadful Trump specter had passed and they could all go back to being the good-natured losers of the Bush-McCain-Romney eras was effectively retracted within a few days. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has disgraced herself by joining the Trump-hate operation of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and, in Republican terms, is sinking without a ripple as a consequence.

Meanwhile, with the political left’s Supreme Court-packing threat appearing to fade, the court’s justices have blown away the Democrats’ plan to assure their own permanent incumbency through unverifiable ballot-harvesting.

Since we have learned that we do not have free and fair elections, nobody is going to win whom the elites don’t approve.

Please just provide us with a list of those individuals whom the Chinese own, our own intelligence services, and our enemies approve of, like Joe Biden, to vote for. Probably best to make voting mandatory like it was in the USSR.

Don’t forget.

When Romney played this same role in 2012, it worked flawlessly against the radical Obama. /s

Temperamentally Trump isn't capable of calm and moderate. Besides, he didn't win before by being the calm and moderate candidate why would he win as one now?

I assume the author of this piece is a mult-billionaire ex-president married to a super model. I like to see this type of stuff for the humor. I readily admit I don’t live on the same plane as Trump, and neither do most people. I sometimes wonder why he does what he does, but I’m not arrogant enough to second guess it.

Why does an “extremely intelligent man” spew the same socialistic stuff as US-born never-Trumpers?

I can’t find him writing anything about Trudeau attempting to make himself into a dictator via Bill C-10.

Is the author so obtuse that he doesn't even understand the political dynamics at work here?

Donald Trump doesn't kick establishment Republicans around in every poll (in 2016 as well as today) by being a "calm, moderate candidate." He wins by standing up and saying what's on the mind of normal Americans without any regard for who gets offended by it.

If Trump runs and wins in 2024, it will be with the recipe that carried him in 2016: by pointing out that a dysfunctional government run by corrupt politicians hasn't served Americans well. Period.

I would not call it bombastic. Lots of meaning behind what he said. Accusing Trump of bombast is a never-Trumper tactic.

Conrad Black has columns in the Epoch Times. I always read them. Trump might not run in 2024 because of his perception of a decline in his energy and health.

He’s ahead by 80 points by virtue of being denied in 2020. He can’t come across as vindictive or wrong and petulant of course, and so far seems to be handling that well, but I don’t think anyone will blame the man waiting in the wings for a full four year term.

He’s ahead by 80 points because grassroots supporters of the GOP got tired of supporting losers a long time ago.

Sometimes President Trump did not seem to understand that concept.

You have absolutely not understood what was happening. His news coverage was 95% negative. He would stub his toe and the media would scream that he had Russian doctors inject him with bleach while prostitutes were urinating on him to resolve the issue.

And besides most of what the media hammered him on for tweeting was the truth, but you want him to keep his mouth shut. There was no Russian Collusion, Mueller was not only corrupt but also had dementia, Comey should have been fired and leaked classified materials, FBI did try overthrow a sitting President, Intelligence agencies leaked and lied to the press, the justice system overwhelming attacked conservatives (unbalanced beyond imagination), there was massive voter fraud, intelligence agencies spied on his campaign, the list goes on and on.

Which one these items would you prefer he kept his mouth shut on?

Wishful thinking from Trump's mind reader?

Or fake news.

Calm, moderate candidate? So in other words be something he’s never been? That doesn’t sound like a winning strategy.

Agreed, the only way Trump ever wins again is IF the voting fraud can be reigned in. There is no way realistically to eliminate it altogether.

Also, the reason many Republican politicians are not speaking out against the obvious fraud is their campaigns too have been guilty of it in the past. The Dems did not just invent this in the last couple elections. It has been going on for many years, maybe even decades. It just got so blatant in 2020 that it was ludicrous.
