Perhaps this is a “rogue” Stasi faction, as I am thinking that Grandma Nan might not like this turn of events.

These are political activists. They intend to be put in jail. It gives them street cred with the Socialists. Therefore, they have to do things guaranteed to achieve their ends. So far, it’s been a lose/lose for law enforcement. It will continue to be so until the tactic fails to work. Given the money and marketing mojo behind it, it will almost always work. There is no counter movement money or marketing. Violence pays. The violent people more often than not get what they want.
To counter this, it would take a few conservative billionaires hiring some genius marketing people and a few powerful access channels. The best would be Google and Facebook...but we know where they side.
