Students pursuing graduate degrees at some of the nation's most prestigious universities are being slammed with loan debt of up to $200,000, yet most only earn $30,000 two years after graduation.
A recent Wall Street journal article detailed the strife students faced in highly competitive programs that leave them financially crippled and wondering if the degree was worth being saddled by six-figure debt.
The Wall Street Journal cited Columbia University as one of the main perpetrators of charging inordinate tuition fees and offering little financial help or guidance in return. Recent film graduates had a median debt of $181,000 while making a median income of $30,000 just two years later.

Nobody forced these people to go into debt for useless graduate degrees.

Elite degrees only exist to protect the economic interests of the wealthy. Unless you have a talent for networking, elite degrees are as worthwhile as a community college diploma that taught the same material.
HOpefully people learn that elite degrees are worthless, unless you’re already rich.

Not sure I would go that far, but I would agree that the upside of going to a top Ivy league school is potential connections, including access to the Alumni network, and bragging rights. The most elite schools probably have the top professors there too, but you don’t have to take their courses to graduate with a degree. They are resources you can take advantage of—or not. In most places, including public universities, the quality of the education a student gets is highly dependent on the student themselves.

A fool and his money are soon parted. People who to into debt just for to go to college and get a worthless degree are truly the examples of this phrase.

I would completely agree with that. It is like any legit investment: you take a gamble and you can win or lose. If you lose, it was your decision — don’t go crying to anyone. Success in life is NEVER guaranteed.

Should’ve gone into the trades. But then again, these effete elites are averse to getting their dainty, painted fingernails dirty.

Let me get this straight - you get an overpriced degree in a useless subject, then start whining when the bill comes due.
Should have learned to weld. Or code.

I am aware that a degree from an elite college will be looked upon more favourably, but it’s not so favourably looked at by employers that you will be company president unless you’re already the son of a CEO.
That’s all I mean.

When I was making hiring decisions, both for the State and later for a global consultancy, I never cared where tge sheepskin came from nor any honors.
Those only matter for post grad schools or law/medical school admissions.
Harvard or Cal State Northridge are the same for 99% of jobs.

All good and fine...until you find out that you’ll be drug tested - so not an option for those considering the Ivy League.
