Man arrested after guns were found in his Chicago hotel room. The mayor called them 'weapons of war'

An Iowa man is facing two felony charges after a loaded handgun and rifle were found in his Chicago hotel room July 4, near where hundreds of families were celebrating the holiday, prosecutors said.

Keegan Gregory Casteel, 32, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of weapons/loaded. He appeared in court Tuesday and was released after paying a portion of his $10,000 bond, according to court documents obtained by CNN.

Police said there was a handgun and a loaded .308 caliber rifle "equipped with a laser and high-powered scope" in Casteel's hotel room. Five rifle magazines were also found, according to Casteel's arrest report.

The weapons were discovered by an employee of the W Chicago Lakeshore Hotel who went into Casteel's room to clean it, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said Tuesday.

They were near a window "in a very suspicious position," Brown said. The employee "likely prevented a tragedy from happening," Brown said.

Casteel's 12th floor hotel room overlooked a portion of Chicago's Ohio Street Beach along Lake Michigan and Navy Pier, prosecutors said during Tuesday's hearing. Brown noted the employee's discovery was significant because hotels have not been cleaning rooms daily due to Covid-19 restrictions.

This is idiotic. I travel with my firearms when driving, and I bring them into my hotel room for safe keeping and protection as I would at home. A single handgun and a rifle is not an arsenal. Aside from any hotel restrictions there might be for firearms on the premises, how is this "two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of weapons/loaded"?

Teeth, fingernails, and knuckles are all weapons of war.

Illinois preemption law grandfathered in Chicago's preexisting laws, so ARs and laser sights are illegal in Chicago.

Let me guess - he was white, and the guns were not found on the South side.

Because otherwise, it wouldn’t have mattered.

Iowa enacted Constitutional Carry as of July 1st. How many guns would they find if they searched a South-Side Chicago housing complex? They’d need a truck to haul them all away. Then again, the residents would be the “right color “ and not subject to search.

The United States Constitution did not grandfather in Chicago’s illegal restrictions. The possession charges are garbage and deserve to be tossed.

That said, I’m curious about why they were (allegedly) left out and sitting by a window. Maybe totally innocent, maybe not. If they have actual evidence this guy was planning an attack, then I’m glad it was stopped. If they don’t have evidence an attack was about to happen, they should be returning his firearms and apologizing to him immediately. Somebody get Alan Gura on the phone so he can slap Chicago around in court again.

and yet 100 people were shot this weekend in Chicago and they arrested no one. I guess they were shot by weapons of peaceful protest or something like that.

So they aren't cleaning hotel rooms? The filth in there is much worse than Covid.

Not sure how Iowa is related to Chicago.

It’s where the mayor says they get their guns from.

Was there a fireworks display scheduled? It sounds like the room overlooks where the crowd would be. The article makes it sound like he was gong to snipe the crowd, hiding the rifles report with the fireworks. Kind of a mini-Las Vegas attack.

Good thing he’s on the FBI’s radar, now. (((eyeroll)))

I also wondered how an untouched firearm sitting in an empty room is being “used”, much less in an “aggravated” manner. I guess this is under the “they also serve who stand and wait” clause...

The situation does beg some questions:
1) Why oh why would anyone go to Chicago?
2) Why would someone who visited Chicago anyway, leave a loaded rifle in a hotel room, in clear view, by a window? 3) Why did the hotel staff report this to police instead of stealing and selling the firearms, as would be normal. It’s not as if the owner was likely to run to the CPD crying “gee, someone just stole my loaded, scoped .308 rifle right out from under the window in my high rise hotel room.”

Speculative Diagnosis: government operation or guns of irresponsible government agent. Maybe the guest belongs to one of Pelosi’s new Capitol Police cells. Where is Lt. Boyd these days?

"...Judge David R. Navarro told Casteel Tuesday that he understands the man is permitted to possess firearms in his home state of Iowa, but added, "clearly we are not in Iowa." Casteel's permit doesn't allow him to carry or have his weapons in Chicago, prosecutors said..."

Amdenment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

So, apparently Chicago is not under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Constitution.

But, hell, we knew that.
