Biden removes GPA requirements for TEACH grant recipients in order grant access to 'students of color'

The Biden administration announced a plan to extend tuition breaks to future teachers and do away with GPA requirements for grant recipients to increase access for students of color.

"The proposed plan also aims to increase the access that students from low-income backgrounds and students of color have to comprehensive teacher preparation,” a press release from the Education Department says.

The Department of Education oversees the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grant program, which administers tuition breaks to students studying to go into education so long as they agree to teach at schools in underperforming areas for at least four years.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona announced that the grant money given to third and fourth-year students annually will double to $8,000.

That is on top of he fact that teachers have the lowest average SAT scores. Been that way since the 70’s. What we need is even dumber teachers. That will fix it.

Students in the class of 2021 did not have to prove they could write or do math at a basic level to earn their diplomas. A bill headed to Gov. Kate Brown would prohibit any such requirement at least until 2027.

A bill to prohibit Oregon schools from requiring students to show they can read, write and do math at a basic high school level is headed to Gov. Kate Brown after lawmakers gave final approval Wednesday.

The idea is to hit pause on the requirements, in place since 2009 but already suspended during the pandemic, at least until the class of 2024 gets their diplomas and for Oregon to thoughtfully reexamine its graduation requirements in the meantime. A report recommending what the new standards should be is due to the Legislature and Oregon Board of Education by September 2022.

But since Oregon has long insisted it would not impose new graduation requirements on students who have already begun high school, new requirements would not take effect until the class of 2027 at the very earliest. So at least five more classes could be expected to graduate without needing to demonstrate roughly 10th grade level proficiency in math and writing.

The decision to remove the skills requirement was largely but not entirely a party-line one, with Democrats staunchly opposing the proficiency rules and Republicans decrying what they see as a lowering of academic standards.

A spokesperson for Brown told The Oregonian/OregonLive Wednesday she has yet to decide whether she will sign the bill, veto it or allow it to become law without her signature.

Oregon, unlike other states, did not require students to pass a particular standardized test or any test at all. Students could show their ability to use English and do math via about five different tests or by completing an in-depth classroom project judged by their own teachers. In reality, most schools relied primarily on standardized tests and most students easily passed them.

But demonstrating proficiency proved most challenging for students who learned English as a second language, students with disabilities and students of color.

Officials on the Oregon Board of Education, when they enacted the “essential skills” graduation requirement more than a decade ago, said they hoped no student would be denied a diploma for lacking the skills but that schools would step up and help juniors and seniors who hadn’t mastered enough English or math to do so. Many high schools created special math and writing workshop classes for seniors who needed to demonstrate those skills to get their diplomas.

The bill calls on the diverse committee studying graduation requirements to come up with a recommendation “with the goal of ensuring that the processes and outcomes related to the requirements for high school diplomas are equitable, accessible and inclusive.”

Great turn-around story. I was assigned a junior software engineer last year. She is riddled with ADD and communicates like a typical teen using text messages. My oldest son was also riddled with ADD and the teen text vocabulary is easily mastered. She demonstrated substantial capability building database tables and stored procedures. Like your co-worker Dave, she has great capability, but she will need to polish her communications skills to have much hope of advancing.

Apropos to the topic of the thread, we have a generation of students who were grossly unqualified for college and were lured into easy access college loan programs. They are now hopelessly in debt and often never completed the degree program. Their actual aptitude and ability will never land a job that could repay the debt incurred. The same can be said of the scourge of "liar loans" at sub-prime rates granted to grossly financially unqualified people. The stupidity of the Obama era is being replayed by the same players hired into Biden's administration.

Let me tell you a little story about one county in Maryland that I lived in for almost a decade. Prince George’s County is the richest black-majority county in the nation. When we left a dozen years ago, the public school system had a 65% graduation rate. The ones who made it all the way to the stage to get their diplomas had an average 9th grade reading ability and a 7th grade math ability. Any black who can get through four years of college, even if she majored in education, will still know more than the vast majority of her students (even if what she knows is often incorrect).

Yes, it will perpetuate ignorance, but everybody will be happy.

College can be rough - why not give ‘people of color’ a degree based on color? They can start ‘teaching’ right out of high school that way.

It’s racist to expect them to attend classes.
