This was obviously a dispute over the nature of the protagonist/antagonist relationships in Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Is it Ishmael (the narrator) the protagonist? Is the whale itself the antagonist? It can be argued that Ahab is the antagonist, as he is willing to sacrifice everything - the ship and the crew - in order to achieve his revenge on the whale, Moby Dick.
