Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have voted to grant tenure to New York Times writer and author of the divisive “1619 Project” Nikole Hannah-Jones, amid backlash over her “unfactual and biased” work.
The board voted 9-4 in favor of granting tenure to Hannah-Jones after a lengthy closed-session meeting on Wednesday, according to a report by the Washington Post.
The vote comes one day before Hannah-Jones had originally been set to start working as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism at the University of North Carolina (UNC)’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media.
The “1619 Project” author, however, refused to start her job unless she was immediately granted tenure. It remains unclear whether Hannah-Jones will still start her position on Thursday or receive a new start date.
“Not only do we support academic freedom, but we believe that a university — that our university — is the very place that the most important issues of our time should be debated,” said vice chair of the board R. Gene Davis Jr., announcing the vote.
Davis added that the vote was “another important step in creating an even better university.”
“We need to listen to each other, and not cancel each other and call each other names,” Davis said.
After the tenure vote, Hannah-Jones took to Twitter to post a photo of a hand raising a shot glass containing what appeared to be a dark liquid, with no explanation.

Tenure relates to ability to bring in money to the university.
Outrageous!
No hands raised here. They bought it, they own it.
academic freedom. laughable.
This is why nobody takes academia seriously anymore.
UNC hiding behind, “academic freedom”, but in reality they are supporting woke lies and intellectual dishonesty.
This 1619 writer has plenty of ribbons and awards, but does not have the academic scholarship to have tenure at any university....unless it is in the Fiction Dept.
...
Everybody should read 2 important books:
1. 1620...and academic critique of the 1619 Project.
2. The 1776 Report, commissioned by Trump to have academics review the failure of our academics and schools to teach real US Constitution and Foundational History.
I am actually surprised that four people voted not to give her tenure.
I wonder if those four will be purged for their “racist” behavior.
Well, that’s a big loss for the university and its students.
They have useless indoctrinator attempting to poison young skills full of mush.
UNC is showing what a class act the are... as in zero!!!
Tenure....
I read an article by a conservative professor who was denied tenure despite many publications in peer reviewed scholarly journals and awards.
When he questioned his interviewer he was told they had discovered he had conservative leanings. “The real question for me is how you got this far. Our practice is to find a way to get you guys out of your jobs before you reach the stage of having to be denied tenure. I don’t know how you slipped past that.” Guy said he would deny everything if the professor told anyone.
Recall, UNC is the same university that held fake classes, no work, no assignments to keep their student athletes gameday eligible. They ran this scam for over 15 years. The NCAA declined to penalize UNCheat.
UNCheat’s academic reputation just took another dive.
It's Opposites Day at UNC...
UNC isn’t noted for their academic standards. Their entire sports program got caught in massive “cheating” and bought their way out of it.
I am not surprised UNC administration caved and gave this fraud tenure.
I haven't since the Black Panthers told the University Of California to make Angela Davis a professor or they would burn it down.
"Angela Yvonne Davis (born January 26, 1944) is an American political activist, philosopher, academic and author. She is a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. A Marxist, Davis was a longtime member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) and is a founding member of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS). She is the author of over ten books on class, feminism, race, and the US prison system. "
Debate? They don’t want to debate, they want to lecture.
UNC has declared itself to be an educational sh!thole.
Then sic their Antifa blackshirts on you.
It’s time for the UNC alumni to make their opinions on this known.
