A new Russian submarine packed with nuclear firepower and capable of taking out an aircraft carrier or even an entire city has sailed for the first time.
The 604ft Belgorod, the largest submarine to be built in the last 30 years, was put to sea for the first time yesterday as Russia flexed its naval muscles in the wake of an incident with British destroyer HMS Defender in the Black Sea.
Experts fear the 79ft-long torpedoes – dubbed Poseidon – could be detonated underwater to cause a radioactive tsunami and threaten coastal cities with waves up to 300ft high.
The enormous vessel is reportedly operated on behalf of the nation's secretive Main Directorate of Undersea Research, and is understood to be central to Russia's intelligence gathering operation.
But it is also believed to be equipped with up to six nuclear-armed torpedoes, each capable of carrying warheads with an explosive power of two megatons – equivalent to two million tons of TNT, or more than 130 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.

The waves from the Baker test at Bikini atoll, a ~20 kt warhead (handwaving), 3.5 miles from shore, started at 94 feet high, and were only 15 feet high by the time they reached shore 3.5 miles away.
Seeing that they put most of the nuclear stuff outside the hull and put an escape sub on the bottom I'd say the movie must have scared the pootin out them. :)
That is a huge Submarine!!!
“Every single US boomer can take out cities. Multiple cities. No tsunami needed.”
Yes and we’ve had them for decades.

Stupid-assed “experts” don’t even know what they are for.
“It’d be a suicide mission wouldn’t it?”
No.
It has a range of well over 1,000 miles as it is nuclear powered.
It’s designed to take out military ports and facilities.
Russkies and their use of nuclear energy have a sad history.
Stupid-assed “experts” don’t seem to know anything about wave propagation either if they think that radioactivity will be carried on the wave to the shore.
I don’t think sonar picks up lobster pots......
Wow. it can take out a WHOLE city.
And how many cities can a US Ohio class boomer take out?
24 missiles x 8 MIRV warheads so about 200 CITIES per submarine.
Some great reporting here .
I would think that days / weeks on station would result in a a torpedo with no idea where it is. Undersea you navigate inertially and without a position fix from a star or satellite the accuracy of your inertial navigator degrades over time to the point where it's useless. Submarines address this problem with extremely accurate navigators that are large and complex, not something you'd put in a torpedo.
This suggests that such a torpedo would have to surface periodically to get fixes and / or communicate. And as such, would be vulnerable at least some of the time. Interesting thing to contemplate.
44 feet longer than than our largest (Ohio class).
For all:

wouldn’t all that external stuff make her slower and noisier?

Other than that Ms Lincoln, how was the play?
Depends on the range and speed of the torpedoes. Also, they can be set to go into a circling pattern for very long periods while the mother sub evades.
According to the head of The Joint Chiefs of Staff, Belgorod is Russian for “White Rage”.
