Experimental brain implant instantly detects and relieves pain

Researchers from the New York University School of Medicine have developed a brain implant designed to detect pain sensations in real-time and deliver bursts of pain-relieving stimulation. The device is still deeply experimental but a new proof of concept study demonstrates it working effectively in rodent models.

In the world of brain implants the chasm between science fiction and reality is still quite vast. Apart from some exciting human tests showing paralyzed individuals with implants regaining a sense of touch or controlling computers with their mind, most research in the field is still nascent.

Animal tests have demonstrated incremental technological advances, such as pigs broadcasting neural activity or monkeys playing Pong. Now, an interface that can detect pain signals in one part of the brain and immediately respond with stimulation to another part of the brain targeted to relieve that pain has been developed.

The system is called a closed-loop brain-machine interface. These devices have previously been explored for detecting and treating epileptic seizures but this is the first time the system has been used to treat pain.

and when those with implants are zombified, they will only be stopped by a blow to the brain...

I almost misread the headline. Implant, not transplant. The latter would be wonderful. Put my brain into a 20 something body that is in great health and great looking.

But what if it’s supposed to hurt? Most pain is your body telling you something is broke, go fix it.

I would imagine there are those who suffer great unending pain (terminal cancer patients), and in this application, would be a great boon vs the debilitation application of opioids.

But to just switch off pain whenever it arises in healthy people? Sheer stupidity. God endowed us with a nervous system to provide the feedback known as pain in order to tell us that something is wrong.

Why is this a sign of the End Times?

It already exists for patients that have chronic pain. The stimulators don’t currently react to new pain as it occurs. They are set to counteract existing pain. Usually activated in the spinal column.

BINGO!!!

It's not your enemy, it's you buddy that says "Hey! If you do that you're going to damage yourself!"

(Although there are sometimes he could scream uncontrollably for no good reason...)

I think it is more for real chronic disabling pain. Would be a tradeoff probably UT worth it for folks that scream in pain just getting out of a chair or bed in morning, people in real disabling pain

The problem of course being telling the difference. My wife screwed up her shoulder a few years ago. She spent six months hopping from doctor to doctor, they all just wanted to give her vicodin. She kept saying “yeah but what’s wrong with my shoulder?” And they all just shrugged their shoulders and tried to hand her a scrip. Finally she got to a rheumatologist who figured out that she’d hyper extended something and was constantly irritating it, 2 months of PT and anti-inflamatories later, no shoulder pain.

Pain, as unpleasant as it is, is a necessary warning sign of a physical destruction or malfunction. Don’t bypass its sensation without making the necessary repairs to the cause of the pain.
