NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Southern Baptist Convention tamped down a push from the right at its largest meeting in decades on Tuesday, electing a new president who has worked to bridge racial divides in the church and defeating an effort to make an issue of critical race theory.
Ed Litton, a pastor from Alabama, won 52% of the vote in a runoff against Mike Stone, a Georgia pastor backed by a new group called the Conservative Baptist Network that has sought to move the already-conservative denomination further to the right.
Litton, who is white, was nominated by Fred Luter, the only Black pastor to serve as president of the United States’ largest Protest denomination. Luter praised Litton’s commitment to racial reconciliation and said he has dealt compassionately with the issue of sexual abuse within SBC churches, another hot-button subject at the gathering of more than 15,000 church representatives.
Stone had campaigned aggressively, including speaking at churches across the country and even appearing on Fox & Friends on Tuesday before the vote. And the Conservative Baptist Network had encouraged supporters to come to the meeting as voting delegates.
But in the end, the message that seemed to resonate with voters was that Stone — who supported a motion to repudiate critical race theory, an academic construct for framing systemic racism that has been a target of religious and political conservatives — was a divisive choice.
“We’re a family, and at times it seems like an incredibly dysfunctional family.” Litton said after the results were announced (OK?). “But we love each other.”
Also Tuesday, the delegates rejected a proposal that would have explicitly denounced critical race theory. Instead they approved a consensus measure that rejects any view that sees racism as rooted in “anything other than sin.” …

Gosh, a lot of hard work for a position that "most Southern Baptists don't even know who the President is" and is "only used to coordinate retreats and that sort of thing" and "has no more authority than any other Baptist pastor".
Hmmmmm.
If a group cannot specifically condemn CRT which cultivates racial hatred and division, it is not a group for me......no matter how virtuous they boast and what they call themselves.
Wrong. The SBC apparently sets the direction of the seminaries. And the seminaries have gone woke.
As much as I like Ed Young, it’s been time for me to go. At this time it looks like either IFB or OPC.
I have met Fred Luter. He is a good man.

Mark.
Well, a bunch of your fellow Southern Baptists on here have argued with me on this point and claimed I don’t “get it” because I am Catholic, and that Baptists use a “bottom-top” model where the most powerful position is the local pastor and the LEAST powerful is the President. They insist its a useless, figurehead, honorary title and the vast majority of SBC members have no idea who the President is.
Take it up with them.
No doubt Neville Chamberlain was also a good man...
Regards,
You mean Litton?

If one can be born and raised a Southern Baptist I was it. Sadly after many years as an Air Force wife I discovered my church had left me.
Now home church is all that’s left. These young pastor kids don’t even think the Old Testament is relevant to today’s Christians. Their idea of Christ is either a teddy bear or Santa Clause. None have met the Christ John saw in Revelation.
But God still reigns and His Word is still true. No matter the church body, we worship Him in spirit and truth. In Him and He in us is saving faith.
Bkmk
All due respect, but this is your opinion.......and is a big broad swipe at Southern Baptists.......and simply not true in all churches
Yes we always need to know what is being taught at the seminary level......and yes, through the years, destructive influence has tried to infiltrate.....and usually dealt with
BUT each Baptist church is autonomous.......their hierarchy has far less influence than you think and does not rule them
Also, The PCA Presbyterian ( NOT PCUSA) has maintained an excellent restraint on apostasy......but like all congregations, must always be ‘watchmen’.....
We happen to be in a very small Baptist church right now and loving it......
Going Methodist seems to be the business plan.
This is all wrong if you are going to last very long. When you say “Hey! Look over here! There’s a church that hasn’t caved!” You are admitting defeat. Maybe I’m stupid, but the last time I checked, Jesus said that the very gates of hell would fall before his movement. Something is wrong folks.
What in tarnation did I say to get that response.....
...elaborate please
“I have met Fred Luter. He is a good man.”
Too bad he endorses NOT-good men.
“BUT each Baptist church is autonomous”
If in SBC, the churches are semi-autonomous. They’re still connected with the Convention, sending money to Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong, etc. Their missions programs are HQ based.
Best to go with a truly independent Baptist church with no authority except God.
SBC is an organization. Doubtful that God had that in mind when He started the Church. In the New Testament, churches certainly weren’t answering to some guy in Convention HQ.
Another case of too big?
Seems like everything Big gets corrupted.
Baptists have been sending money to Lottie Moon since I was a little kid.....
.....I grew up in Baptist churches Since I was born.....some Southern, some Independent.....
I am covering a lifetime of Baptist churches......and a good span of years with Reformed Presbyterian.......
.....but I have never heard apostasy taught in any of them......and I assure you I would recognize apostasy
