High court asked to review men-only draft registration law
AP ^ | June 6, 2021 | JESSICA GRESKO

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is being asked to decide whether it's sex discrimination for the government to require only men to register for the draft when they turn 18.

The question of whether it's unconstitutional to require men but not women to register could be viewed as one with little practical impact. The last time there was a draft was during the Vietnam War, and the military has been all-volunteer since. But the registration requirement is one of the few remaining places where federal law treats men and women differently, and women's groups are among those arguing that allowing it to stand is harmful.

The justices could say as soon as Monday whether they will hear a case involving the Military Selective Service Act, which requires men to register for the draft.

Ria Tabacco Mar, the director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Women’s Rights Project, who is urging the court to take up the issue, says requiring men to register imposes a “serious burden on men that's not being imposed on women.”

Men who do not register can lose eligibility for student loans and civil service jobs, and failing to register is also a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and five years in prison. But Tabacco Mar says the male-only requirement does more than that.

Mrs. Phyllis Schlafly, please forgive us. We have squandered your heroic victory and allowed the socialist forces of evil to destroy the family and society.

I’m an equal opportunity employer. Everyone has the right to die.
So of the most vicious fighting units in the world were female. The days of motherhood and applepie are gone forever.
I used to be like you. The bottom line conclusion is that the only way to win a life or death struggle is to kill you opponent.
If you don’t rid the earth of them once and for all they’ll be back, smarter and harder to kill. That’s just nature. People don’t want to face the truth as it’s too unpleasant.
It’s about time we faced the truth.

I think you meant to say “low.” A high number put you near the end of a long line of potential draftees.

Responsibilities exist without compulsion by others.

This thread and conversation has been about the draft as it has existed in the USA. And it has damned well been compulsory unless those subject to it were able to avoid it by some illegal means, and then the law prescribed punishments for that.

"Responsibilities without compulsion" is a totally irrelevant concept in this discussion. The draft has been compulsory, and there has been no move by the feminists, who demand equal rights and opportunities, to require that women be subject to the draft the same as men.

It you want to continue going off on tangents, go ahead, but this "point" you keep trying to make is not relevant to what's being discussed here.

I'm going to make a reach here, but I'm betting that you never saw combat.

The idea is not to get killed, it's to kill the other guy (to paraphrase Patton). Military service is not and never should be an "equal opportunity employer". You pick your combatants carefully, arm and train them as best you can and turn them loose. War is organized murder and that will never change.

Women (and men who want to be women) are actually useless for combat - except to impede your own side. We discriminate against paraplegics, the blind, the old, the infirm and the mentally ill in military combat units - no reason at all that we should change that if we intend to win.

You lose your bet. Like I said, I used to think like you. Times have changed. Take the concept of mercy. My concept runs like this, If I kill you now you won’t have to live in my ideological state. Ghat is my mercy. Do you have any concept of how much the country is infested? If the forces aligned against the idea of the Republic? Don’t think for one minute that this is my preferred state. It is not. Better them than us. Think stout our enemy, he will offer us no mercy.

I prefer all a volunteer force plus to keep the government honest, a total private militia force. Conscription has no place in a free society.

My point is central.

And yes, there are reasons why the draftable “unorganized militia” is defined as is.

........I think my good friend growing up was in the 1st Marines. Not sure. He was 18 and got shot in the head a few weeks after getting to Vietnam. He died instantly.

Fantastic guy! I drive through Johnson City often since it’s 25 miles south. Driving by LBJ’s ranch I always have a flashback of Bobby!

I truly believe that the ghosts of 58,000 soldiers and marines weighed so heavily on LBJ in his last year or two that that was probably what caused his early demise.

There have been a lot of problems in Israel. Men risked their lives and the mission to save women in 1948. Israeli women aren't front-line soldiers. Some do combat as pilots, but most are in support roles. Israel is less PC here than the US based on hard experience.
Also, Israel has a national service requirement. Women are far more likely to seek civilian national service.
