Researchers in Japan use soybean compound to make catfish 100% female

A team of researchers in Japan has succeeded in making catfish all female with a compound found in soybeans -- a development that promises to increase the production efficiency of this and other species whose females are more valuable than males in the food market.

The team, from Kindai University's Aquaculture Research Institute and based at the institute's Shingu Station in Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, used isoflavone -- a compound found in soybeans similar in effect to female hormones -- to create the all-female groups of catfish. The feat is a Japan first, according to the university.

As female catfish grow faster than males, "by making them all female, production efficiency will rise," commented team leader and aquaculture science associate professor Toshinao Ineno. "This can be applied to other farm-raised fish whose females are more valuable."

According to Ineno, in catfish cultivation, which has been attracting attention as an alternative to increasingly scant eel, females grow to shipping weight -- at least 600 grams -- in six to 10 months after hatching. Males, which grow more slowly, are often discarded. Though it has been known that administering female hormone turns male catfish into females, this method is banned for fish for human consumption. So Ineno came up with the idea of using soybean isoflavone, which is sold commercially as a dietary supplement.

(It's not the same estrogen compound (it's plant-based). Fear of the Impossible Burger is sexism, homophobia, and transphobia)

You Don't Need to Fear the Estrogen Content In Impossible Burgers

"For starters, the compound contained in Impossible Burgers isn’t human estrogen at all—it’s phytoestrogen, a plant isoflavone that acts similarly to human estrogen, but doesn’t have nearly the same strength, according to Insider. Phytoestrogen, which is often found in soy, can promote the effects of naturally occurring estrogen, which exists in all humans. But it can also suppress it, since it has both estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects. "

"It’s worth pointing out that the feminization fears behind the Impossible Whopper estrogen rumors are inherently tied to sexism, homophobia and transphobia in some circles. Meat eating is also connected, in some men’s mind, to masculinity; the idea of eating a veggie burger amounts to an assault on their very identity. There’s nothing to fear from eating a plant-based burger, however; a bite of a charbroiled soy product won’t take away anyone’s man-card. So if you’re worried an occasionally meatless meal will turn you into a woman, don’t be. Instead, prove your masculinity by taming your fear of new foods."

I seem to recall recent (last 10 years) studies saying that soybean products were not good for males, and recommended not giving soy baby formula to boys due the estrogen-like compounds

Isn’t that already done with Tilapia in farm raised populations? The substance is different but it performs the same task.

Wow. Your response to this article, perhaps without you realizing it, reveals a great deal about you. You’re rabid defense of veggie burgers, and defense of the LGBTQ+ agenda is quite revealing. Thanks for outing yourself. Much appreciated.
Personally, I’ll stick with actual burgers when I want one and continue to condemn the LGBTQ+ lifestyle and its agenda.

A lot of Chickem farmers could use something like this, once it’s ready for more advanced animal life. For many, the Rooster is of very limited value as livestock, along with it’s tendancy to crow whenever the feeling hits.
I can tell you by having neighbors who own Roosters, they don’t only crow at the break of dawn. “Why wait for sunup, when you can do it right now?” seems to be the atitude.

most soybean products as they are created and offered tpday are not good for men. they act like eatrogen inside men. its rather extremely not good for men and their health.

another reason why the powers that be want men to eat more soy.

now the pickled/fermented stuff in pots that has soy in it, thats considered a different story, at least from what i have read

personally i stay away from all soy, as i don’t really like the pickled/fermented stuff either

“studies of these phytoestrogens in leading peer-reviewed medical journals suggest that even lower doses—such as the amount in the 25-gram soy protein target cited by the FDA—have the potential to wreak hormonal havoc.” - https://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/a19539170/soys-negative-effects/

Now I wonder about soy sauce, but to me it’s different than eating edamame, tofu or drinking soy milk.

I know my sister pulled anything with soy in it when my nephews were young after the study came out.

Guys probably should not eat unferminted soy.

Even if gals should probably not eat that much of it.

BUT.... people are not fish.

People are mammals.

Mammals do not change their sex.

So it will not turn males into females.

But it might give you cancer, make you infertile and other delightful things so best not to eat it.
