'Past the point of no return'? Iowa Democrats feel hopes fading

Democrats lost last year's election for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District by the narrowest margin in a House race in almost 40 years. After the six-vote heartbreaker, some expected Democrat Rita Hart to immediately declare a rematch in the southeast district long held by her party.

So far, no Democrat has stepped up to run.

The hesitancy to jump into a district now as competitive as they come is one measure of Democrats' fatigue in a state viewed for decades as a true battleground. Even as the coronavirus pandemic gradually wanes and President Joe Biden's job approval remains strong, Iowa Democrats say they can feel their party receding, particularly from the industrial river towns they once claimed as bastions.

"I kind of think we're past the point of no return," said Rich Taylor, a former Democratic state senator who lost last year after eight years representing economically struggling Lee County, which hugs the Mississippi River in the state's southeast corner. "I believe that the people of southeast Iowa will wake up. But I don't think it's going to make a difference for the next 20 years."

Don’t celebrate yet.

The reason for the Dem’s losses is that the white blue collar vote felt it was being slighted and ignored by the Dems (which they were) as they were edged out of jobs by illegal immigrants (which they were).

Trump helped turn that around, but the new GOP may not.

Maybe Iowans finally grew weary of libtards screwing up the state and illegal aliens killing their kids?

I'm surprised ABC "News" published this story. Like all the other MSM, they offer nothing but propaganda for the Marxist party. Generally, there is never anything but good news for the Dems and bad news for the GOP.

How did this story slip through? It may cost someone at ABC their job.

For Iowa (and other) Demonicrats, following their trial and conviction, the “point of no return” needs to be the short stop after a quick drop.

President Joe Biden's job approval remains strong,

It sounds like they over-sampled the Democrat's leading demographic, the cemetery voters...

Now can we just get rid of Pelosi’s puppet Cindy Axne next election? Oh please, oh please...

She barely won last time and that was because there was a libertarian in the race, and the Republican candidate is a milquetoast with no personality. He ran as a Democrat lite candidate. He had been in the office before Axne beat him and he lost again in the rematch. The only reason he ever got anywhere in politics is because he used to work for Grassley. I’m so tired of these losers being rewarded for their party loyalty and no other reason.

We Iowans don’t need Democrats. We have Grassley and Ernst to play their role

This is the first time I can remember where a Democrat lost a race by just a few votes, and I'm 71. Usually if it's this close, they find a box of ballots in the trunk of someone's car which has 85% Democrat votes and enough to "win".

It’s an uphill battle against both the Democrats and the Republican Party of Virginia.
