A new study says that black people living in most US cities are subject to double the level of heat stress as their white counterparts.
The researchers say the differences were not explained by poverty but by historic racism and segregation.
As a result, people of colour more generally, live in areas with fewer green spaces and more buildings and roads.
These exacerbate the impacts of rising temperatures and a changing climate.
Cities are well known magnifiers of a warmer climate.
The surface urban heat island effect is the technical term for the impact that the buildings, roads and infrastructure of cities have on temperatures.
All that concrete and asphalt attracts and stores more heat, ensuring that both days and nights in big urban areas are much warmer than the surrounding locations.
But, within cities, there are often large differences in this heat island impact, with areas rich in trees and green spaces noticeably cooler than those that are dense with housing and industry.

I ain’t buyin’ what the racist con men are selling. . . .
SMDH! I guess a lot of people really are that stoopid. We are but fleas to the earth.
Everything is racist. Get your mind right, peon.
Fun fact: Until modern transportation came into being, whenever our planet had a warming period (i.e. Roman warming period, medieval warm period), people moved into cities because a small area of farm land surrounding the city could support the city. But during the cooling periods (i.e. Dark Ages, Little Ice Age) people had to move away from cities because crop yields were down and the small farm land couldn't support a large city.
As much as people complain about "war for oil", how much worse was it during the cooling periods when many wars were fought to get good crop land?
Of course they do. Originally in this country, and throughout the world, the male black populations were primarily agricultural workers. They lived their lives in the wide open spaces and breathed clean air. When given freedom what did they do?? Most of them relocated to the urban areas in the North and lived in densely populated ghettos. Many escaped from the natural tribal tendency to live in close quarters, lived and worked with whites and improved their condition. But, by and large, the black community chose to live in urban areas and suffer the consequences.
Globull heating??
Globull warming??
Hell, here in the thumb of michigan the forecast for today is for snow....
Where is that globull warming when you need it?
That is true. They must endure double the heat stress as whites, and they are right. While I was working on a new fence I noticed it was 90 degrees in my yard but my back door neighbor, who is black, had a yard temperature of 180. It was noticeable.
If the “heat stress” is bad here, just imagine what they have to endure on the African continent. Ghana, for example has an AVERAGE yearly temperature of 82.
--but better be careful that those heat islands won't tip over , according to that Congressman---
Pure idiotic hogwash.
The .efts goal is to make every white person ashamed of being g white, so everything now is ‘caused by racism. The funniest part is that the left are racist against their own race. White liberal loathe themselves apparently, and won’t be happy till white conservatives are brai washed into loathing themselves as well.
Bottom line? It’s absolutely miserable being a liberal
Climate Racism is a terrible thing. It makes people so insane they spout ridiculous claims about climate being racist. Then they set their hair on fire and run screaming into the night. And to think that you can major in this at Berkeley.
Then ... well ... move.
Big country. Lots of options. Internet makes it orders of magnitude easier than before to find them.
The surface urban heat island effect is the technical term riots see Portland....................................
They like the heat
Yeah, they are called cities Einstein.
Racism is a way to blame others for your problems. Easy to allege.
It's also the best way to shut down your opponent when he's winning the argument.
Only a small mostly uninhabited part of Libya is below the Tropic of Cancer.
Tripoli is roughly at the same Latitude as Atlanta.
So Libya definitely can't be considered "Equatorial Africa"
