Trucking industry stakeholders continue to push back on Sen. John Cornyn’s suggestion of a nationwide transportation fee that would exclusively be levied on commercial vehicles.
In a letter to Cornyn (R-Texas) and his colleagues on the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee, American Trucking Associations and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association criticized any federal effort meant to adopt a vehicle-miles-traveled, or VMT, fee exclusively for trucks. Cornyn has said revenue from the fee would be used to fund highway projects around the country.
The groups, which describe the truck-only VMT fee as the “Cornyn Tax,” pledged to vehemently oppose its adoption. They argued the levy would hinder the freight industry, impact the cost and delivery of products and goods, and overwhelm federal institutions with massive administrative assignments.

Soon after the hearing, Texas Trucking Association President John Esparza told Transport Topics he viewed Cornyn’s action as an assault on an industry with deep roots in the Lone Star State. As he put it, “When you begin to single out small sectors of trucking, not just the trucking industry, and try to put a larger burden on them — this is not equitable, and that’s not the American way. It’s not the Texan way.

In some places trucks need their own interstate sections
You mean, pay for the same things as Biden's "Infrastructure" bill, which is, what, 20% real infrastructure spending?
Good thing Cornyn won re-election instead of that ‘rat he ran against. /s
To be fair to Cronyn (which I don’t like to do, LOL), his proposal only singles out the trucking industry — and one component of it — because that group is already required to report GPS-based VMT data to the USDOT anyway.
Would make PIPELINES more attractive....
Cornhole taxes Semis, Moving Trucks, Cement Mixers and Dump Trucks in his tax scheme.
Operators of vehicles at least 55,000 pounds already pay a Heavy Highway Use Tax on form 2290.
HIDDEN_TAX_PING!
If this new VMT were to become law:
1. Consumers will pay the added costs of shipping businesses will be burdened with. Side note, I would expect shippers to have new administrative expenses to deal with VMT.
2. Ostensibly intended for infrastructure, FedGov will likely use it for other purposes.
3. Whatever the VMT rate is, it wii go up. And up. And up...
4. Ironically, infrastructure will be funded, just the wrong kind. Bureaucrats, buildings, enforcement staff, etc.
Reagan is in Heaven looking down at this and shaking his head.
I’ve always said “When the storm comes, there will be a Red rope and a Blue rope.”The POS Senator from Texas has shown himself to be a spaghetti spined Rino who would be more at home in the RAT party.Resign or be terminated loser
I would like for him to be primaried!!!
Plus their miles per gallon numbers are such that they are paying 3 to 4 times as much federal and state fuel taxes as a car or light truck is paying....so they are paying what libs and rinos refer to as “their fair share”.
John Cornyn must have taken a “stupid pill” recently.
Head Shake.
Gone plumb off the edge of reality.
He suffers from over exposure to DC. Too many years.
I just called Senator Cornyn’s office in Lubbock, it rolled over to his office in Dallas. All of his lines were busy. Some others must have taken note.
I left a polite but terse message about his recent attempts to work with the ComDem’s. The trucking tax and the extended definition on code about background checks and the 2nd amendment.
When I left the message I told them it was a mistake to trust the Dems with anything. Much less changing a definition code affecting the 2nd Amendment.
And told them I am wondering if he recently took stupid pill.
Yes, must agree with you on that.
The US Chamber of Commerce is a #ComDem Shill Operation. And they don’t even hide it now.
Most semi’s get 5-6 MPG.
MY 1976 1 ton Chevy 454 hauling a 4 horse trailer gets about 5.5 MPG.
I have a 2017 Ram with everything on it that I could get that year, except dual rear wheels.
A 40’ side loading Sundowner.
My fuel mileage is 9 to 12 depending on terrain and speed limits.
NOT TOWING 19 mpg on the interstate no matter for how far. Of course it drops in town.
138,000 miles and not one problem other than a couple of recalls which cost nothing. Drove Fords for 62 years, always late model, new....and I would never go back.
There is nothing like the Cummins.
