Romney first GOP senator to say he would vote for Jan. 6 commission bill

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said on Monday that he would support a House-passed bill to create a commission to probe the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Romney’s comments make him the first GOP senator to say that they would vote for the bill, which needs the support of 10 Republicans to pass the Senate.

Asked how he would vote if Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) tries to start debate on the House bill, a move that requires 60 votes to defeat a filibuster, Romney told reporters, “I would support the bill.”

Romney wasn’t asked how he would vote on final passage of the House bill, where it would only need a simple majority. Spokespeople for Romney didn’t immediately respond to a question about if he would change his vote after helping defeat a GOP filibuster.

But Romney’s comments come as Schumer has vowed that he will bring the bill up for a vote, setting up what could be the first successful filibuster of the 117th Congress.

Schumer hasn’t said when he’ll bring the House bill up but characterized the timing on Monday as “very soon.”

But Democrats remain short of the votes needed to defeat a filibuster as GOP opposition to the House-passed bill as it’s currently drafted hardens.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) has previously told reporters that he was inclined to vote for it.

Meanwhile, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has started discussions with Democrats about potential amendments to the House bill.

All three voted to convict Trump earlier this year of inciting an insurrection, though they fell short of the number of votes needed to ultimately do so.

The two biggest sticking points for Republicans are concerns that Democrats would be able to control the staffing and that the commission would stretch into next year, though the bill contains an end-of-year cutoff.

He rushed and almost fell down trying to get to the Traitors Only door.

“Oh, boy. That’s for me!”

Yes, thanks for not putting this in Breaking News. Alongside “Susan Collins equivocates and sort of might go along if some extra language is added, maybe.”

Man, is she a dynamic leader or what?

Of course Romney is the first senator to betray the base. When the Bush rime Family needs a favor they call their favorite fall-guy candidate.

When Mittens hears the call to betray America he always eagerly spits out whomever’s dick is in his mouth to volunteer.

If Romney wins the primary for POTUS most Republicans would vote for the Democrat just to break the junior member of the Unitparty, the GOPe.

If Mitt is voting for it, we must assume the fix is in already.

We grudgingly voted for the Bishop to keep the Kenyan from another term. Romney would have been a Trojan horse. What a loathsome individual. He has no more soul than his alter ego, Bain Capital.

#19: “Romney? He sucks! Bad!” — Obamaphone Lady.

Hah ha ha ha! Oh that whole video is a keeper. I clearly remember the look on her face when she said that, preserved for all posterity. Good stuff.

BAIN CAPITAL...

Say it LOUD!...

Financial PIRATES!

We lifelong and proud Capitalists cringe at what Bain Capital (by many accounts) did to nice people who did not deserve to be the Romney plank.

Romney doesn’t look well at all. I’m betting he’s ill with something. He looks gaunt.

“Pierre Delecto”

Why would Romney choose such a gay sounding handle? Who does that? He was born speaking English.

Cassidy and Sasse are two more; I think Cassidy has already gone public. I think Collins has said she’s against it, but they can probably move a comma in the bill and get her onboard. I doubt they can get to 10.
