Nicholas Oresko (January 18, 1917 - October 4, 2013) was a United States Army veteran and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions on 23 January 1945, during World War II.

Born on January 18, 1917, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Oresko later joined the Army from that city in March 1942. He was sent to Europe and arrived in France in September 1944, three months after the Normandy landings, as a platoon sergeant in Company C, 302nd Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division. His unit spent the next several months mopping up pockets of German soldiers who had been bypassed in the Allies' initial push through the northern part of France. In December 1944 they were redeployed to replace the 90th Infantry Division as part of Patton's 3d Army. The 94th assumed positions opposite the Westwall and the German 11th Panzer Division. On January 23, 1945, near Tettingen, Germany, Oresko, by then a master sergeant, single-handedly defeated a German bunker, was seriously wounded, and then destroyed a second bunker despite his injuries. For his heroic actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor nine months later, on October 30, 1945. The medal was formally presented to him by President Harry Truman during a ceremony at the White House. Following the death of Barney F. Hajiro in January 2011, Oresko became the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient. Oresko lived in Cresskill, New Jersey. Bayonne School #14 was renamed in his honor in July 2010. Oresko died while undergoing surgery for a broken femur on October 4, 2013. He was 96 years old.

Master Sergeant Oresko's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

M/Sgt. Oresko was a platoon leader with Company C, in an attack against strong enemy positions. Deadly automatic fire from the flanks pinned down his unit. Realizing that a machine gun in a nearby bunker must be eliminated, he swiftly worked ahead alone, braving bullets which struck about him, until close enough to throw a grenade into the German position. He rushed the bunker and, with pointblank rifle fire, killed all the hostile occupants who survived the grenade blast. Another machine gun opened up on him, knocking him down and seriously wounding him in the hip. Refusing to withdraw from the battle, he placed himself at the head of his platoon to continue the assault. As withering machine gun and rifle fire swept the area, he struck out alone in advance of his men to a second bunker. With a grenade, he crippled the dug-in machine gun defending this position and then wiped out the troops manning it with his rifle, completing his second self-imposed, 1-man attack. Although weak from loss of blood, he refused to be evacuated until assured the mission was successfully accomplished. Through quick thinking, indomitable courage, and unswerving devotion to the attack in the face of bitter resistance and while wounded, M/Sgt. Oresko killed 12 Germans, prevented a delay in the assault, and made it possible for Company C to obtain its objective with minimum casualties.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Got Plans?

Bible in a Year:

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

Proverbs 16:9

Caden, a young man of almost eighteen, was anticipating attending his first choice of a college on an academic scholarship. He was involved in a campus ministry in high school and looked forward to participating in a similar ministry in the new environment. He’d saved money from his part-time job and also had an excellent lead on a new job. He’d established some great goals, and everything was coming together exactly on schedule.

And then in the spring of 2020 a global health crisis changed everything.

The school let Caden know that his first semester would probably be online. The campus ministry was on hiatus. The job prospect dried up when the business closed. As he despaired, his buddy glibly quoted words from a well-known professional boxer: “Yeah, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

Proverbs 16 tells us that when we commit all we do to God, He’ll establish our plans and work things out according to His will (vv. 3–4). True commitment, however, can be difficult. It involves an open heart to God’s direction, along with a willingness to resist charting our course independently (v. 9; 19:21).

Dreams that don’t come to fruition can bring disappointment, but our limited vision for the future can never compete with God’s all-knowing ways. As we yield ourselves to Him, we can be certain that He’s still lovingly directing our steps even when we don’t see the path ahead (16:9).

Reflect & Pray

What disappointment changed your plans for the future? What can you do to seek God’s guidance today?

Loving and wise Father, help me to trust You even in my disappointments knowing that You’re a good and faithful God and You’ll establish my steps.

Howdy, PRO.

Did you have an easier weekend as a break after that big project last weekend?

Hey there, radu!

It was a nice day! A bit warm at 85, but could have been worse. It was cloudy most of the day that took the edge off the heat. I’ve been watching those clouds, too, but though they have grown, they seem to be headed due east. Rain is in the forecast tomorrow though.

Was it a hot one there? I will bet you all are glad to have the good AC now. It will help so much! Is your back better?

Bright sun and low humidity...perfect weather Saturday for helping my Legion Post place flags at one of our largest commercial cemeteries.

Hiya radu!

Easy weekend, I mowed early today, mid 70's only, then just been relaxin'.

Son and I finalized plans to spend a few days in early June at a cabin at a lake resort close to here, should be fun. It's just nice to 'get away from it all' once in awhile and relax.

You still working weekends at the museum?

Are the kittehs behavin'?

You were cooler there than we were here. How often does that happen this time of year? LOL

When I first looked at the radar loop, it looked like some of the rain would move your way but now it doesn’t look that way. Darn the luck. I hope you do get some tomorrow.

Hot and steamy here, feeling more like July. I went outside once for a minute and that was enough.

It’ll take a day or two before my back feels better. Moving those heavy plants from the garage to the carport always knocks it out for a little while. Just a part of life and I’m used to it. It slows me down for a little while but doesn’t get me down.

We were cooler?? That IS hard to believe! Poor you! We were humid too, and we were glad it wasn’t any warmer. We were wishing for rain, too. Maybe it actually will tomorrow. Maybe.

I hope that heat wave passes you by before long. It’s quite a leap from what you had last week! Going outside won’t be fun for a while.

Good evening, radu...did you get some time today to recover from the museum excitement yesterday? Not too hot?

I’m soooooo jealous! LOL Your mid-70s sound divine. We broke 90 and have more days of that ahead.

You did have an easy weekend. After last weekend, mowing must have felt like doing nothing.

Your plan to head off to the cabin sounds really nice. Nothing like getting out in the country, away from the hustle and bustle. If there’s good fishin’ at the lake, fish cooked on a grill is mighty tasty. YUM!

Yes, still working at the museum on Fridays and Saturdays and loving it. It’s SO nice to be back up there again. Last year was the pits with it being closed.

Kittehs behaving? Surely you jest. LOL I will say things have calmed down a little since we had Jasper neutered. He kept everyone fired up while he was still a “real man”. He has his moments but now he wants to play with the others and they think he’s attacking them. Jack’s figured it out, though, and they have fun together taking turns chasing each other.

Hard to believe you were cooler, isn’t it?
We’ll be toasty all week, though we’ll cool off mid-week from low 90s to upper 80s. woo. It’ll get even more humid since slight chances of rain start Wed. and go through the weekend.

Spent a little time out on the deck just surveying my domain. Haven’t seen a duck in two days...no little birdies or jays either. Looked for a body, but I don’t see one.

All the leaves are popping out and the view of the school will diminish soon. Wondering what it will look like now that the trees I had cut down are gone.

Hey there, Kathy.

I got a little done around the house today but did spend most of the time plunked in a chair. That was due more to the ol’ bum back being out of whack than recuperating from the museum though.

Definitely too hot to spend time outside. I’m a wuss. LOL

Ruh roh. I hope the ducks are just off catching fish and swimming. They haven’t been able to do that for several months. There have been plenty of them taking advantage of Lake Hood since the ice melted, though there aren’t any fish to eat. They still enjoy paddling around.

The little birdies not being around isn’t typical though. They ALWAYS enjoy hitting bird feeders! I hope no hawks or owls have been around. :-(

They leaves started popping out fast up there. The mountains are even greening up now. The views on the cam are so pretty nowadays.

It IS hard to believe. LOL! I was whining about being so hot, and you really WERE. Maybe you’ll get the rain that will relieve the heat. Meanwhile, thank goodness for AC!

The heat’s just getting started. It isn’t summer yet. No point in whining ‘cause it won’t go away. :-) As long as the A/C works, we’re good.
