Some 1,600 jobs are being cut at a Jeep Cherokee factory in northern Illinois as automakers continue being plagued by the global shortage of semiconductors.
The U.S. arm of Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, said Friday it was cutting one of the two work shifts at its Belvidere Assembly Plant as of July 26. That could result in the layoffs of 1,641 workers,

the factory’s situation “has been further exacerbated by the unprecedented global microchip shortage,” Tinson said.
The Belvidere facility has been idled since late March, with Stellantis repeatedly delaying the reopening that is now not expected until at least later this month.
Numerous other auto plants, including many owned by General Motors and Ford, have shut down in the past few months because of the chip shortage, which was caused by semiconductor makers switching their factories to more profitable consumer-electronics processors when automakers closed last year due to the pandemic.

I have a 2013 Jeep Compass.I can state without a shadow of a doubt it is the worst POS vehicle I have ever owned. I have been buying vehicles since the early 1970s and this thing is the worst. Never again.
Mine popped on about 30 miles after buying it which means the stealership cleared it. Bad catalytic converter. Luckily, VA doesn’t care about that. It stayed on until we sold the vehicle.
Too bad semiconductors aren’t made in the USA anymore.
They are junk anyway.
I wouldn’t buy a Jeep these days anyway. FIAT: Fix It Again Tony.

Ditto that. I have an aging sporty car. At about 10 years old and ~70k miles I needed new brakes. The dealer service rep quoted ~$5K to replace all 4 high performance brakes. Third party high performance brakes are about half of that. A few years earlier the dealership was bought out. Within a few months the new service rep said I needed "clutch work". I had the master cylinder replaced under warranty a few years before even though I had no problems. I declined the "repair" and 30K miles later the clutch still works like a charm.
Microchip availability may be an issue but having Leftist Bruce Springsteen call Americans racist certainly doesn't help sales.
Good!
For my 3500 duramax which is 2015, I never take it to a dealer. Brand new I took to a diesel mechanic who had his own shop in the country. He deleted it, put a 4 inch lift in (need it for the areas I work) and then I didn’t touch anything until 175000kms. Did brakes at 175000. All third party stuff, lasts better. At 275000 I did front end joints etc, which is a miracle considering the places this truck goes and now I’m at 354000kms and she’s going strong. All of this from my private mechanic.
Finding a good mechanic you can trust is worth a lot.
Just wait till china takes over Taiwan. We get 90% of our chips from Taiwan right now. You think china will be kind to us?
That same plant closed down the third shift about a year ago. Now a second shift. That area south of Rockford is really going to be hurting.
Jeep dealership and a used Jeep dealership here are loaded with Jeeps............ People just ain’t buying Jeeps right now.....................
I’ve been fairly lucky with my cars. I haven’t run into any big repair bills that weren’t covered under warranty.
There is one model, already, sad to say.
Just sayin'. Ever think what would happen in a real war? Every weapon system uses computerized systems of some kind...
Since when do Republicans care one little bit about workers being laid off? Most GOPers are happy when that happens. The whole party is designed around off shoring and worker replacement...
Romeo, please...my Homey.
Good! that is what they get for putting that bastard Biden in the White House and kicking President Trump out.
In our foolishness, we sold the seed corn for a 401k promise.
Enjoy the darkness
The whole party is designed around laying off workers... please.
