Some 1,600 jobs are being cut at a Jeep Cherokee factory in northern Illinois as automakers continue being plagued by the global shortage of semiconductors.
The U.S. arm of Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, said Friday it was cutting one of the two work shifts at its Belvidere Assembly Plant as of July 26. That could result in the layoffs of 1,641 workers,

the factory’s situation “has been further exacerbated by the unprecedented global microchip shortage,” Tinson said.
The Belvidere facility has been idled since late March, with Stellantis repeatedly delaying the reopening that is now not expected until at least later this month.
Numerous other auto plants, including many owned by General Motors and Ford, have shut down in the past few months because of the chip shortage, which was caused by semiconductor makers switching their factories to more profitable consumer-electronics processors when automakers closed last year due to the pandemic.

ELECTRIC JEEPS!..................
All it cost was 10% for the big guy!
All automotive blame is on the chip shortage, but I doubt that. I suspect the class-warfare, confiscatory Bidenomics is the root cause.
Great! Government assistance for everyone! What could go wrong?
Making America Last Again
I've always wondered why CEOs, who are supposed business geniuses, take world-wide, famouse brand names, and change them to meaningless, made up words no one knows or will remember?
Rumor is they were having trouble getting Check Engine lights that would stay on permanently
Bruce Springsteen will have to wait for his upgrade.
A neat trick to make the stealer service departments a real profit center.
I wish I could get chips, then.
It would be nice if we made more microchips in the US and if the EPA allowed rare earths to be mined in America, etc..
When Bill Clinton signed NAFTA, Ross Perot said : Listen for the giant sucking sound as good paying American jobs go away
I remember driving past the output lot at that plant a long time ago, when it was filled with Neons that Chrysler could not move. Not sure how long it took to get the workers back there after that, or when the plant converted to Jeeps.
Toyota sold a record of almost 1 million vehicles in March because they planned ahead regarding chip supplies.
There’s no money in selling cars anymore, it’s the service departments and parts departments that rake it in.
I don’t doubt the huge chip shortage and supply chain problems.
But I suspect there’s a lot more at work here than just those components.

LOL, dead company walking.
Gee, I hope the peaceful protesters don’t protest!
Perfect excuse to move the jobs to TN or TX as well.
