There’s no money in selling cars anymore, it’s the service departments and parts departments that rake it in.

Ditto that. I have an aging sporty car. At about 10 years old and ~70k miles I needed new brakes. The dealer service rep quoted ~$5K to replace all 4 high performance brakes. Third party high performance brakes are about half of that. A few years earlier the dealership was bought out. Within a few months the new service rep said I needed "clutch work". I had the master cylinder replaced under warranty a few years before even though I had no problems. I declined the "repair" and 30K miles later the clutch still works like a charm.

For my 3500 duramax which is 2015, I never take it to a dealer. Brand new I took to a diesel mechanic who had his own shop in the country. He deleted it, put a 4 inch lift in (need it for the areas I work) and then I didn’t touch anything until 175000kms. Did brakes at 175000. All third party stuff, lasts better. At 275000 I did front end joints etc, which is a miracle considering the places this truck goes and now I’m at 354000kms and she’s going strong. All of this from my private mechanic.

Finding a good mechanic you can trust is worth a lot.
