1,600 Layoffs Coming at Northern Illinois Jeep Cherokee Factory

Some 1,600 jobs are being cut at a Jeep Cherokee factory in northern Illinois as automakers continue being plagued by the global shortage of semiconductors.

The U.S. arm of Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, said Friday it was cutting one of the two work shifts at its Belvidere Assembly Plant as of July 26. That could result in the layoffs of 1,641 workers,

....

the factory’s situation “has been further exacerbated by the unprecedented global microchip shortage,” Tinson said.

The Belvidere facility has been idled since late March, with Stellantis repeatedly delaying the reopening that is now not expected until at least later this month.

Numerous other auto plants, including many owned by General Motors and Ford, have shut down in the past few months because of the chip shortage, which was caused by semiconductor makers switching their factories to more profitable consumer-electronics processors when automakers closed last year due to the pandemic.

I talked to a home automation equipment manufacturer last week. Their products evolve slowly and the microprocessors they use have lots underutilized power, so they bought a five year supply. I was astonished anybody would buy a five year supply of any part, but they sure made a wise purchasing decision.

That’s just the parent company. There won’t be any cars driving around with “Stellantis” nameplates. Chrysler, Fiat, Peugeot, Dodge, Jeep, Alfa Romero, Citroen and other names are safe for now...

To the extent any of these workers are Trump supporters, my sympathies. To Biden supporters who are about to bite the big one, tough nuggies.

> I’ve always wondered why CEOs, who are supposed business geniuses, take world-wide, famouse brand names, and change them to meaningless, made up words no one knows or will remember? <

I’ve wondered the same thing. I guess that if you’re a failing CEO, you can still get your bonus pay by “rebranding the company for the 21st century”.

You are probably right...automakers don’t want to be stuck with huge inventories at the end of the year.

Hey Illinois - Elections have consequences. Looks like you’re getting what you paid for. Maybe you should clean up (or clean out) your voting process.

A shortage of chips means a glut of dip, no?
Market dip, that is.

"Stellantis"??? That's the first I've heard of that.

Words always evoke unexpected meanings, especially brand names and logos. For instance, "Stellantis" immediately brings to mind footwear for me...

Now I know I've planted that seed in your mind and forever more you will think of heels when you hear that company name. Kind of like an ear-worm for the eyes. Heh, heh.

Then you’ll REALLY see some layoffs. There is NO SUCH THING as zero carbon around here. Will they have a “Ready Kilowatt” symbol on them?

... I suspect there’s a lot more at work here than just those components.

Dark undercurrents everywhere. It is creepy.

“Rumor is they were having trouble getting Check Engine lights that would stay on permanently.”

Lol! I used to own a Jeep. After the first 15,000 miles, the check engine light was always coming on for one problem or another. It was unusual for a month to go by without the check engine light coming on. I’ll never buy a Jeep/Chrysler product Again.
