Former NFL running back Merrill Hoge was one of the early players to demonstrate post-concussion effects later in his career. One of the things that made his case stand out was that he started his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and at the time he played for them they were the only team that ran their rookies through a series of tests to measure cognitive abilities, reaction timing, hand-eye coordination, etc. So later in his career the doctors were able to go back and compare his brain function to the "baseline" measurements from his rookie training camp to measure how much they had declined over time.

I'm kind of surprised the NFL doesn't have EVERY team measure cognitive abilities on an individual basis -- not by race or any other group -- to measure physical and mental changes in players over time and after their careers are over.

Why does the NFL even have $1 billion compensation plan for brain injuries?

Doesn’t that add to the argument that football is a dangerous contact sport? Besides let each player sign a waiver before they take that million dollar paycheck. Let each player take their chances.

A good lawyer would argue then, that blacks deserve MORE comensation rather than less, as every point they lose is a lot more devastating to them than whites, if you assume they are starting with less ability in the first place.

IE for a guy with $50 losing 25 dollars is a lot worse than a guy with $200 losing $25.

Actually, there is some scientific validity to this although I wouldn't try to explain it to the press, not in this environment.

Cognitive impairment is measured by the person taking a written test developed years ago. This results in a cognitive "score" that either shows normal cognition or some level of impairment.

However, different groups score differently among people with normal cognition. The most common reason is if the person is is not a native English speaker because the test was written in English by a native speaker. So, the resulting score has to be "normed" for these differences. Otherwise, to take the present case as an example, a Black person may be scored as impaired even if their test results fall within the range of normal cognition for their group, which would result in a non-impaired person being compensated.

That said, I have absolutely no intention of arguing on behalf of the NFL for a host of reasons. In fact, I'm rather enjoying their pain.

While former and current NFL players who suffer from dementia or other brain injuries are entitled to compensation from the NFL if their injuries were sustained while competing in the league, the NFL also argues that it is correct to assume that black players have lower “cognitive skills” on average, and this should be taken into consideration when awarding compensation.
