The Virginia police lieutenant fired from his department in April for anonymously donating to Kenosha, Wisc., shooter Kyle Rittenhouse's defense fund says he wasn't provided due process by his department.

"I thought I was a free man in America expressing his personal opinion to somebody, giving some words of encouragement and making a simple donation," former Norfolk Lt. William Kelly told Fox News.

Kelly, who served for 19 years and was just 10 months from receiving his retirement savings without a penalty, was fired on April 19. His $25 donation to Rittenhouse's fund surfaced following a data breach to the anonymous crowd-funding site.

He used his government email address.

Big mistake.

He did absolutely nothing wrong. This gutless POS police chief needs to pay for this. I hope the fired cop makes his life miserable while winning his grievance.

Where in his work agreement does it say that his action a firing offense? Otherwise it could be an actionable wrongful termination.

He should seek due process. However, if he used a city computer and did it while on the clock, it’s muddy.

If that’s true, his appeal will probably fail. They’ll argue that by using his government email address, he was inappropriately speaking for his entire department. And that’s a clear violation of some rule mentioned in some huge manual somewhere.

But had he said something positive about BLM, no problemo.

The realreason was to reduce his pension.

I agree. America is not nearly as free as it used to be. Power has been slowly transferred by Democrats and their Republican allies decade by decade whole Americans slept.

Sad! We are losing our freedom, the trend pushed by celebrities, big business, the media, and universities. People have even lost their jobs because they are accused of saying an “offensive” word decades ago during their teen years or posting a simple comment on social media. And the list of prohibited words keeps growing. We even have thought crimes.

"He used his government email address. Big mistake."

I can't believe he actually did that. He should have known better, but if that was his first offense, he should have been counseled or had a warning placed in his file. I hope he can get his job back. I'll bet there's been worse offenses committed by others in that department, that were smoothed over with just a note in their personal folder. I worked with C.O.'s who had DUI's, DWI's, and worse, and although they were brought up on departmental charges, they were allowed to keep their jobs after paying a fine, or being suspended without pay for a specific period of time. Those violations are far more serious than anything this man did. If he belongs to a Union, they, and their lawyer(s) should be fighting to get his job back, especially if they can show leniency in more severe incidents.

Using his work email would have been a mistake. But, even if he did that, does anyone think he would have been fired if he had sent a contribution to Black Lives Matter?
