This is crazy. I stopped for gas just now having no idea what was happening. It’s out. People here told me they’d been to other stations and found the same. pic.twitter.com/7LDVdUXPo4

“Anyone who stores everything ‘in the cloud’, without local physical backups, is an absolute moron.”
The (cheap) laptop that I’m on has an SD slot, and that’s where I backup my stuff, along with the cloud. Obviously the SD Card and the computer are encrypted.

“Would you like me to remotely activate your airbags?”
You can try that on my cars, but the detonators are in my garage and not connected to anything.

“Where’s the redundancy?”
Backups are never considered redundancy.

EVERYTHING is now on the Internet. It’s absolutely wonderful...what could go wrong? LOL. Again I say, just because you can make something available via the Internet that doesn't mean you should!

I didn’t, but I FULLY understand Complacency and Normalcy Bias, along with management not seeing a problem until it slams them in the face, so no surprise at all for this FReeper. I know I shouldn't be surprised after 35 years in Information Technology, it's just so damn' aggravating though. Even still, even after all this time.
I'm so glad I'm close to retirement. I'm getting too old for this sh*t.

Working in industry, I do believe. someone wanted a bonus and cut back up and failsafes out. Did you ever work for ABN AMRO or LaSalle Bank? (now defunct)
That's exactly what Senior Management did there when bonuses were in jeopardy of being cut. I.T. Budgets got slashed to the bone and then nothing got done. Not even the critical work.

No.
But I banked with LaSalle.
Thought about taking them to court for some of the games they did with automatic deposits being held up for weeks.
Left Chicago instead.

That is funny/not funny.
After a few months, I got a live check and cashed it in order to pay bills.
This was 2002 or so.
Hated LaSalle

You are right on that. It is by design. Food will be next. It IS HERE!! Went to Walmart in two different towns this a.m. The shelves reminded the old Soviet Union pictures of empty shelves. No chock milk, very little white milk, barely any OJ. Other shelves in can food isles were empty here and there and there and there, you get the drift. The entire food area of the store was in bad shape in the Walmart in Lenlock area of Anniston, Alabama. The Jacksonville, AL store was not much better. Those stores are about 6 miles apart. Gas prices at both Murphy gas stations at Walmart jumped over 25 cents per gallon in 24 hours. The Texaco station near the Jville store jumped from $2.49 .9 to $2.89 .9!!!!! Talk about a huge jump!!!

“Interestingy, the hackers posted a message on its dark web page that it would vet buyers of its ransomware in the future to “avoid social consequences.”” I’ve been thinking about that. I think they want to be like the mafia - keep their heads down, try not to draw enough attention to risk getting broken up or jailed, and simply make money. However, they blew it with this company...and now they’re scared to death that people will be coming for them, to put an end to their little racket. They should be scared. White-hat hackers could and would expose them.
Unless the rumors of FBI involvement are true.
In which case, nobody's scared. In fact, they'd be satisfied and defiant.

I was at LaSalle/ABN AMRO from 2003 - 2007. When I first got there it was a nice place to work. My CIO was a great guy, knew his stuff, had all the right relationships in the bank to get things done/obstacles taken away -- and then the damn' Dutch in Amsterdam took over and implemented their penny pinching hands-on/micro-managing style over everything.
Boy did that suck. The worst part was getting called my first day on vacation in the summer of 2006 and told I needed to decide quickly which 25 of the 160 people that reported to me I'd be keeping to close projects down as the remainder were being let go due to "cost cutting" (they were seeking buyers for the bank.)
I left the bank in early 2007 when I just couldn't take it anymore and that was right before the housing crash started.
