Road Trip: Fort Shafter, Hawaii

HIfortshafter1

Fort Shafter, in Honolulu City and County of Honolulu, Hawai‘i, is the headquarters of the United States Army Pacific, which commands most Army forces in the Asia-Pacific region with the exception of Korea. Geographically, Fort Shafter extends up the ridgeline between Kalihi and Moanalua valleys, as well as onto the coastal plain (as Shafter Flats) at Māpunapuna.

A portion of the area is also known as the Palm Circle Historic District; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been further designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It is also known as Palm Circle or 100 Area.

Fort Shafter is the oldest military base on Oahu and celebrated its 100th birthday on June 22, 2007.

Fort Shafter has been home to the senior Army headquarters in Hawaii for a century. Construction began in 1905 on the ahupua'a of Kahauiki, former Hawaiian crown lands that were ceded to the United States government after annexation. When the post opened in 1907, it was named for Major General William Rufus Shafter (1835–1906), who led the United States expedition to Cuba in 1898.

Palm Circle was laid out as a cantonment for an infantry battalion. The barracks and officers' quarters were arranged around a parade field ringed by royal palms. The first unit stationed at the new post was the 2d Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment.

The 25th Infantry Division prepares for deployment to a theater of operations to perform combat operations as part of a corps counterattack. On order, it conducts theater-wide deployment within 54 hours of notification to perform combat operations in support of USCINCPAC theater strategy.

The 25th Infantry Division is recognized for the first successful free democratic elections in Afghanistan on 9 October 2004. One of the missions of the 25th Infantry Division was to track down insurgent Taliban and Al-Qaeda members in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan. In July 2005, a 4th Brigade was added to the 25th Infantry Division as an airborne brigade stationed in Fort Richardson, Alaska. It deployed in October 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Listening to Wise Advice

Bible in a Year:

The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.

Proverbs 12:15

During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln once found himself wanting to please a politician, so he issued a command to transfer certain Union Army regiments. When the secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, received the order, he refused to carry it out. He said that the president was a fool. Lincoln was told what Stanton had said, and he replied: “If Stanton said I’m a fool, then I must be, for he is nearly always right. I’ll see for myself.” As the two men talked, the president quickly realized that his decision was a serious mistake, and without hesitation he withdrew it. Though Stanton had called Lincoln a fool, the president proved wise by not digging in his heels when Stanton disagreed with him. Instead, Lincoln listened to advice, considered it, and changed his mind.

Have you ever encountered someone who simply wouldn’t listen to wise advice? (See 1 Kings 12:1–11.) It can be infuriating, can’t it? Or, even more personal, have you ever refused to listen to advice? As Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” People may not always be right, but the same goes for us! Knowing that everyone makes mistakes, only fools assume they’re the exception. Instead, let’s exercise godly wisdom and listen to the wise advice of others—even if we initially disagree. Sometimes that’s exactly how God works for our good (v. 2).

Reflect & Pray

Why are you sometimes reluctant to listen to the wise advice of others? How can you be sure the advice you receive reflects true wisdom?

God of wisdom, teach me Your ways and help me to avoid folly. Thank You for putting others in my life who are in a position to offer helpful advice when I need it.

Hi Kathy, Robin and I had a great time over the weekend getting ready to replace a fence in her backyard.

Lots of chainsawing of shrubbery to get things ready and I was SORE after all of that. Feeling better now and will rest for the rest of the week.

Is your snow all gone?

Howdy, luvie.

No wild and wooly weather today but it’s been a nippy one. Cloudy, damp, and it never got out of the 50s. Feels like March, not May.

That does sound more early spring than late. That cotton won’t grow with those temps. Hhmmmmmm.......🤔

We were at 70 today, 77 tomorrow and then 59 on Wednesday. “Supposed” to get rain tonight and Wed, but ain’t holding my breath. LOL!

Good evening, radu...how’s your weather? Drying out yet?

We are ready for a cleansing rain, but the sprinkling amounted to half a dozen drops. I could see the dry spot under a car, but it only lasted about 15 minutes.

The cool weather has definitely held back the cotton’s growth but that goes for the corn and soybeans around here too. We have normal temps coming Sunday and on but have to get through the week of 60s, with lows in the 40s, first.

Brood X is also waiting for the warmth so they can come up from the ground. :-)
