A group of cybercriminals allegedly responsible for the ransomware attack that shut the largest fuel pipeline in the United States said on Monday it only wants to make money, not disrupt society, as Washington scrambled to help restore the network.

...

The FBI on Monday pinned the blame on the cyber group DarkSide. A statement in the group’s name said “our goal is to make money, and not creating problems for society.” It's statement did not mention Colonial Pipeline by name.

There are MANUAL VALVES AND CONTROLS.

This is all BS to take advantage of the Biden situation period...

Even Cheney is directly involved with this line...

I know the physical pipeline itself was not attacked. I know it is the computer system which operates the pipeline which was attacked. What I don’t understand, is how this pipeline operated before the internet was invented, and why such computerized operations are online the way they are.

I do a lot of business with a major US company that is not in the technology space. They got a hijack attack and it took weeks for them to straighten everything out and get back to 100%.

Oh, but I'm sure with the full resources of the Bite-me administration on this they'll get these folks back up much sooner . . .

Usually “cost savings”...utilizing the Internet for computer automation versus running leased ISDN telephone lines (or similar) for data into each pump station and control/valve point and the company offices is far, far cheaper. As to how they did it pre-1990’s/Internet I don’t know....not not a pipeline person. Maybe we have a FReeper pipeline expert here? I would assume many more employees and radios/phone systems??

Before computers, human beings switched the valves and kept the records by hand. Those computers replaced a LOT of people. They probably don’t have enough trained people available to do it old school anymore.

I’m have no idea who thought up this brilliant idea but Colonial has a huge tank farm located in Austell/Powder Springs, GA. Located directly across the road from it is a huge natural gas storage and pumping facility.

What could go wrong?

That’s not uncommon and typically happens because it’s a location where nobody wants to live nearby so put the petro storage there.

Is there some reason they can’t replace the computer system?

Indeed. Reformat, reload, restore from backups. They do have backups do they not? Personally, if I were hit with something like this, it would be a matter of exactly that. For a business not to at least be able to recover from it is criminally negligent.

The first webcam on the internet was to track the status of a coffee pot in the computer science department at Cambridge.

And the first 'appliance' on the internet was a coke machine at some college as well.

I don't understand the need to put everything on the internet. I have a couple of things around here, like my stereo that are accessible from the local lan, but not from the outside world.

Colonial has been there since before I was in high school. The natural gas facility across from it is maybe 1 to 2 years old. FWIW, I’m now 62. There’s a golf course adjacent to both and the area is surrounded by single-family homes from at least 60 years old to very recently built.

Wow had to be some shenanigans to get that nat gas storage into an area close to multiple homes. But the good news is that Biden and Kamala will shut off the nat gas like California is doing, so it will just be a defunct facility in a few years.

My fear is that this was a test run to see how easy it is to take down systems like this.

Obama always used to pull the ‘we only just found out about it in the news’ excuse whenever faced with a non-softball question.

Probably everything was put online to negate the need for lots of secretaries and operators.
