Canada's Realization That Its Covid Response Was Worse Than the U.S. Is a Blow to Its National Prestige

Canada’s overall response to the Covid pandemic has been a blow to the country’s national prestige. Canadians are asking themselves why America will get back to normal months before Canada.

They’re supposed to have a superior health care system. They’re supposed to have a more competent and civilized government. They’re supposed to be better than the U.S.

Canada’s leaders used this fantasy to explain away their own failings. “You think it’s bad here, just look at what’s happening in America!”

But Canada got some sobering news recently. The Macdonald-Laurier Institute released a comprehensive, data-driven, comparative study of the pandemic performance of 15 rich industrialized countries and to the shock of Canadians, they finished 11th. Worse, the U.S. finished 9th. It made many in the country realize that their government may have screwed the pooch in responding to the pandemic.

Spectator USA:

At first a lot of the commentariat scoffed that the Index couldn’t possibly be right because Canada ranked behind the US. But in large part thanks to the irrefutable data we marshaled, America’s superior performance has now become conventional wisdom in Canada, while our own poor performance has recently been mocked in the American and international media.

The numbers don’t lie and while Canada is a smaller nation, its rates of death and infection top those in the U.S.

If anything, in Canada the situation feels worse now than it did at the outset of the pandemic. And while restrictions are more severe than ever, anecdotal evidence suggests that compliance is falling, which will only prolong our misery.

True, the incidence and mortality from COVID-19 has been lower in Canada over most of the pandemic, but recently Canada surpassed the US in cases per million. As well, the rate of ‘excess deaths’, or the increase above trend in deaths

Canada’s government-run healthcare system wasn’t agile enough to walk and chew gum at the same time. Government usually does a very poor job of directing resources at several problems at once—the market does it much more quickly and efficiently.

The U.S. never had a big problem caring for emergency cases like heart attacks and appendectomies while dealing with the pandemic. Even in places like New York City, where the virus was most concerning, care for the sick and injured never wavered and somehow, beds and care were found for all.

Canada’s Realization That Its Prime Minister Was A Bigger Racist Than the U.S. President Was a Blow to Its National Prestige

Canada's poor performance relative to the U.S. might actually lend credence to the theory that Vitamin D deficiency plays a major role in the spread and the severity of COVID. This would certainly help explain why Florida, Texas and have done so well while New York, Michigan and Canada have done poorly.

I would also point out that while Canada's overall population density is much lower than ours, it is a much more urbanized country and has a bigger portion of its population living in its largest metro areas.

HUH? With Justine TrueDOH as pm, thinkin’ canaDUH lost it’s “naitonal prestige” quite a while ago. Not to mention, this “national prestige” notion. Only “nationalist” oppressors “take pride” in their country. Get woke canaDUH. My apologies to the REAL folks who reside there.

Last I saw the cancer survival rate in Canada was half the US rate. In the USA if someone is diagnosed with cancer they usually start treatment right away, even if they are broke. There are a lot of programs to help people. My wife worls for Intermountain Health Care and they write off millions and million of dollars for charity treatment every year. In Canada it can take weeks to start treatment. The Brits are worse.

It’s because health care in this country is run by politicians who want to appear as the ultimate benefactors (a Pierre Trudeau cabinet minister once called Medicare “the most popular government program ever created”) and also the unions like CUPE and OPSEU whose clerical and janitorial staff members make that good bit more than their private sector counterparts.

This is a system created in the 1965 to 1969 era under Lester Pearson, Trudeau, and Tom Kent that failed doctors and nurses (so many left to go to the United States for much better working conditions) and patients (many of whom end up on waiting lists for treatments and some who also go the United States for such care). So it is not at all surprising it failed us in this instance as well.

Wrong. Noncompliance will end the misery for most a lot sooner. Some will die unfortunately, but all we did by "flattening the curve" was to prolong the curve and prolong the misery.

The American health care system has a bureaucracy of billing that we all bitch about. In reality, it usually takes an hour or two to navigate it and you can begin treatment.

Canada and the U.K. have a real bureaucracy. Sure, it’s free, but it might take 6 weeks for the bureaucrat to approve your treatment.

I am pretty confident which system I choose.

Canadian leftists (of which there are many) are very sanctimonious about their health-care system. American leftists encourage and echo it back to them.

Having relatives in both countries, I have heard many “horror stories” from Canada’s state-run system.

There are many reasons why the Covid 19 response in Canada is worse than the USA.

But Chief among them is the failure of our sophomoric ideologue, poseur , drama teacher Justin Trudeau. That failure was in not securing sufficient timely vaccine supply.Trudeau could have easily secured vaccine supplies by cutting a sharing deal with President Trump and his Warp Speed program , by investing in the reasearch investment effort in parallel with President Trump. Both Canada and Mexico had the opportunity to join in that effort.Trudeau balked . Now Trudeau’s EU man bun, Euroweenie, socialist confreres stabbed poor Justin in the back, to the detriment of all of Canada and the health of Canadians, The prig needs to be held to account, we are exhausted from Trudeau’s governance via his personal leftist ideology.

Secondly there was a failure to communicate to the public the benefits of personal use of Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquin protocols as prophylaxis , easily made available to all Canadians so they could take care of themselves while awaiting the burgeonong federal public health program. Trudeau insisted on not being able to chew gum and walk at the same time, a congenital problem with virtually all Liberals who are Socialist cancel acculturators in Canada.ENOUGH!

We need courageous leaders in Government now, enough with the socialist liberal tail chasing and political posturing, and the so called great Socialist Reset. Canadians do not want it.Canadians want their freedom back.
