Texas Senate approves 'constitutional carry'
Washington Times ^ | Jim Vertuno

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas would allow people to carry a handgun without a license, and the background check and training that go with it, under a measure approved by the state Senate on Wednesday.

Texas already has some of the loosest gun laws in the country and has more than 1.6 million handgun license holders. Lawmakers have reduced classroom and shooting range training requirements over the last decade, but had been reluctant to eliminate the license requirement altogether.

I rode my Stingray bike with ape hangers downtown to Sears when I was 12 yo. I bought a Russian 7.62x51 and a box of shells for $12. I rode home across downtown with it across my handlebars. Nobody said a peep. Course that was in 1963.

Man I miss that country. Can you remember "The USA"?

I'm glad my dad didn't have to watch this.

Governor Greg Abbott has said he will sign it and seems to be behind the bill.

There were differences between the House and Senate Bills.

Neither one of them were simple.

I’m not sure they were buried, but neither version is a simple bill.

“We need to have rifle clubs back in the schools.”

Agree

Yes, on the guns in the pickup back window.

It was like that here. It was a father/son thing. I don’t ever remember a rifle club. But many families were serious hunter. Still are. Lots of places where informal ranges are available. I have good locations on my property.

“and it’s always been a racist/anti-freedom measure”

Nonsense.

“tomorrow they’ll hunt you down.”

They may try.

That crap was tried before here, after the Civil War. Of course they didn’t have the web and social media.

It was also tried in places that some of my ancestors live in much farther east than Texas. Those stories are still relayed by family members to each generation.

But back then weapons were somewhat different too. When caring pistols openly was made illegal, it did not come from inside groups in Texas. It came from occupation bureaucraps.

“Traveler”?

Yes. It was a trust factor. Some of it still exists.

Yeah, I actually intensely dislike Harleys and don’t ride a cruiser (that style of bike), nor do I ride a fully-enclosed ‘crotch rocket’ style motorcycle. Mostly I’m on ‘standard’ Hondas. Annnnd I still have been treated like I was one of the Hell’s Angels that just robbed a bank. Sitting in a park on a bench, bike in a parking spot nearby, literally eating my lunch and reading a book on my phone - and here come the cops to roust me because “a biker just robbed some place”. I later found out it was just an excuse - they *already* knew that what they were looking for a no-helmet bearded guy wearing the B-movie pirate gear so many Harley riders love on a red Harley with a flame job tank. My description? No beard, clad in all black textile riding gear, black helmet, all black Honda.

Yeah. Not even close. And yes, the dispatch recordings confirmed that they knew the correct identification points ahead of time.

Not the first time either.

Russian 7.62x51 wasn’t a thing you could buy in the US in 1963. :P

Perhaps you meant that you bought a Russian Mosin in 7.62x54R?

There is nothing wrong with a pragmatic, well thought out background check policy. The same for weapons training. Do you give a kid the keys to the car when they turn 16 and say, “OK, you’re on your own”?

A gun is a car without the wheels and just as deadly. I lost a good friend to a drunk driver and my son lost two of his best female friends who drove drunk and died.

Common sense is needed now more than ever. I’m pro-gun ownership by responsible people but not everyone is responsible, sensible, and basically mentally stable enough to own a gun. Criminals don’t care about any laws but we are supposed to be law abiding and supporting (when they are reasonable). Spending a little time and money for proper training is worth it, if only to prevent accidents around the house or in a car.

I don’t want to lose any good Freepers to carelessness or stupidity, nor do I want to be the victim of someone who should not have had access to a weapon because of their temperament, lack of training, or illegal activities.

All my grandchildren have been taught how to handle a gun safely and properly (their mother is NRA certified; their father a Marine combat veteran of two wars; their uncle a veteran of Iraq and a former police officer, and I taught both my kids how to shoot before they got formal training.

The problem with that is that in the era of Big Data, the government is using those background checks as potential checklists of who to come get first. Background checks, permits and registrations were used as checklists to seize guns in flooded New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. On camera, officers took an old lady’s only protection, a revolver, away from her.

They will be used that way again.

It has also been used as a list for connected criminals to know what house to go to - not avoid, go *to* to steal firearms.

We used to have firearms safety training in many schools, or families handled it. Unfortunately, the people screaming the loudest about needing to regulate guns are the ones who got firearms training removed from schools.

I would also point out that ‘trained’ personnel can be some of the worst in terms of firearms safety and usage.

Talked to a guy that did a stretch in Huntsville. Texas prisons are not fun.

You said: Although I’d give felons of any type their rights back after their sentence/fines are served.

Nope. Far too broad a statement. The issue is recurrent danger. But, there are some felonies that are not related to violence that restoring after penalty is served makes sense. I know people who have not been restored after 15 years, who have never committed another crime. In one case it was at 19 years of age, was not violent or drugs. The law in Texas is 20 years after sentence served. There are other cases that I know of that court action has restored them in much quicker time.

Excellent! Governor Abbot has already said he’ll sign it. Texas is a really nice addition to the list of states that have adopted constitutional carry.

Louisiana is up next.

* Heck, the cartels instituted no permit carry decades ago.”

Exactly, that’s what I told my wife. We both have our Texas LTC and she was a bit wary of constitutional carry. When I explained to her that criminals have been practicing it forever so why not allow the same for law abiding citizens? Trust the people....

It was Dollar General. It was on my mind but I couldn’t put 2 and 2 together.

I’m sure Jim would do it. He’s very accommodating. And I’m sure he was happy to lose the W part of your name seeing as how far down the globalist hole W has fallen. Guess it was there all along but he had to hide it to get elected.
