AUSTIN, Texas — Texas would allow people to carry a handgun without a license, and the background check and training that go with it, under a measure approved by the state Senate on Wednesday.
Texas already has some of the loosest gun laws in the country and has more than 1.6 million handgun license holders. Lawmakers have reduced classroom and shooting range training requirements over the last decade, but had been reluctant to eliminate the license requirement altogether.

“Law enforcement groups warn that eliminating the license requirement and its background check will make the streets more dangerous.”
Who exactly? That clown Acevedo went to Florida. Most cops are fully on-board with this.
Passed House, then some changes were made in the Senate, so needs to be hashed out before proceeding further.
Bump!
Heck, the cartels instituted no permit carry decades ago.
Texas and Florida is making it nice to move there... and people are.
Look at Minnesota.. they moved in and now in congress making a mess... they vote their own kind in.
Do not want Florida and Texas to go that route.
YES!
Looks like it will die in conference committee as the legislative period ends in a couple of weeks. I am angry that the Republicans allowed these poison pills to be added.
YES I love TEXAS!
Keep your hands off our rights as hard working law abiding and tax paying legal citizens!
What were the Poison Pills added?
All of the amendments that the Senate added were poison pills ... purposely designed to send this bill back to conference committee where it will die for lack of time.
The Senate SHOULD have just approved the House bill without any changes.
But this way, the slick weasels can say they voted for it, but it will not become law anyway.

How do you know it will die in the conference committee?
Because the legislature adjourns in a couple of weeks. There simply isn’t enough time to go through the reconciliation process to produce a clean bill that both houses can approve to send to the governor.
This was back-stabbing on the part of the Senate Republicans.
Article linked above does not take the view that the conference committee can’t work it out. There is one House member quoted who appears miffed by calling the amendments “non-germane” but that’s only one guy. It ain’t over until it’s over.
Some minor concessions, which, I believe, can be fixed in another session.
Yes, well. They’re going to play it up like they are all in favor of working this out. After all, to say they are against guns in Texas will get them fired for sure.
Thus, make the changes, send it back to committee, run out the clock.
Even if the committee could meet and produce a clean bill this week, Each house has to read it three times on three different days.
Run out of time, right?
Not something that can be fixed in another session.
The regular session closes before Memorial Day. All unfinished bills are discarded.
The next regular session will be in 2023.
This is how Texas works.
It could go back to the house, the house could agree with the senate, then on to the governor.
That can be done by passing it in the house.
There is enough time for that, I believe.
But I will check it out.
Ping!
