“Law enforcement groups warn that eliminating the license requirement and its background check will make the streets more dangerous.”
Who exactly? That clown Acevedo went to Florida. Most cops are fully on-board with this.
Passed House, then some changes were made in the Senate, so needs to be hashed out before proceeding further.
Bump!
Heck, the cartels instituted no permit carry decades ago.
Texas and Florida is making it nice to move there... and people are.
Look at Minnesota.. they moved in and now in congress making a mess... they vote their own kind in.
Do not want Florida and Texas to go that route.
YES!
YES I love TEXAS!
Keep your hands off our rights as hard working law abiding and tax paying legal citizens!
Some minor concessions, which, I believe, can be fixed in another session.
Ping!
WOW! I’m amazed! Abbott said he’ll sign!
We need to have rifle clubs back in the schools. That’s where I learned to shoot properly and gun safety was drilled into us. And guess what...we never shot one person!
Interesting, in Texas in the late 1860s during Reconstruction, one had to prove they were a “Traveler,” passing from one area, or town, to another to legally carry a firearm.
bttt
Texas already has some of the loosest gun laws in the country and has more than 1.6 million handgun license holders.
Texas does not require a "handgun license". And what the hell is a "loose gun law"?
This is a more accurate report of what really happened:
https://www.kvue.com/article/news/politics/texas-legislature/texas-senate-initially-approves-permitless-carry-bill/269-11594833-140e-44b7-b3af-696c7ca8bb04
AUSTIN, Texas โ After hours of debate on Wednesday, the Texas Senate voted 18-13 to pass House Bill 1927 (HB 1927). The bill would allow Texans 21 and older who are eligible to purchase a handgun to carry a handgun openly or concealed without a license.
With less than one month left in the session, time is of the essence, so since there was not enough support to suspend the Senate's rules and take a final vote on the bill on one day, the Senate adjourned for about one minute then started a new legislative day to move the legislation forward.
The bill will now go back to the House, where lawmakers can accept the Senate's amendments or request a conference committee, where appointees will resolve the differences in the chamber's versions.
Gov. Greg Abbott has previously stated that he would sign the bill into law.
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick released the following statement following the bill's passage:
โI am proud that the Texas Senate passed House Bill 1927 today, the Constitutional Carry bill, which affirms every Texan's right to self-defense and our stateโs strong support for our Second Amendment right to bear arms. In the Lone Star State, the Constitution is our permit to carry. I congratulate Sen. Charles Schwertner for his leadership on this important issue and for the thoughtful and respectful debate in the Texas Senate today. We have moved quickly on this legislation and I want to thank all those involved who helped gather the votes needed to pass this historic bill.โ
Thank you Conservative Texas Representatives, Senators, Lt. Dan (as I like to call Lt. Governor Dan Patrick in honor of Gary Sinese in Forrest Gump) and Greg Abbott. It's been a long fight, glad to see the fruits.
Oh yes!
There is nothing wrong with a pragmatic, well thought out background check policy. The same for weapons training. Do you give a kid the keys to the car when they turn 16 and say, “OK, you’re on your own”?
A gun is a car without the wheels and just as deadly. I lost a good friend to a drunk driver and my son lost two of his best female friends who drove drunk and died.
Common sense is needed now more than ever. I’m pro-gun ownership by responsible people but not everyone is responsible, sensible, and basically mentally stable enough to own a gun. Criminals don’t care about any laws but we are supposed to be law abiding and supporting (when they are reasonable). Spending a little time and money for proper training is worth it, if only to prevent accidents around the house or in a car.
I don’t want to lose any good Freepers to carelessness or stupidity, nor do I want to be the victim of someone who should not have had access to a weapon because of their temperament, lack of training, or illegal activities.
All my grandchildren have been taught how to handle a gun safely and properly (their mother is NRA certified; their father a Marine combat veteran of two wars; their uncle a veteran of Iraq and a former police officer, and I taught both my kids how to shoot before they got formal training.
Excellent! Governor Abbot has already said he’ll sign it. Texas is a really nice addition to the list of states that have adopted constitutional carry.
Louisiana is up next.
Does that have legal open carry like Virginia does?
Won’t last long here tho with the commies in charge......
Excellent news.
The state of Iowa did this, too. Effective July 1, 2021
