As an Indonesian navy submarine crewed by 53 men glided below the surface of the Bali Sea during a routine training exercise, it may have been hit by an invisible but powerful force that dragged them to the deep.
Indonesian navy officials suspect an internal solitary wave, known to occur in the seas around Bali, may have caused the sinking of KRI Nanggala 402, and the loss of its 53 crew.
The vessel sank to a depth of 838 metres, far beyond the reach of rescuers.
As the personal effects of crew members floated up and the oxygen supply on board slowly dwindled, officials said there was no chance anyone survived.
The question remained: What went wrong?
Many theories have been put forward but authorities now say there is evidence an underwater wave — that can exert an intense vertical pull below the sea surface — occurred in the Bali Sea around the very time the submarine disappeared last Wednesday morning.

A Faulty battery in a torpedo is generally thought to have caused the warhead to cook off. One of the theories anyway. You need electric power.

The only other naval story I head was that his ship was in some port and one guy had never seen bananas before, and of course he went bananas over them. Per what I was told od-ing on bananas is a very bad idea, the man got deathly ill. I suppose the potassium could throw your electolytes out of wack!

On one of the first saturation diving jobs in the gulf a diver was on the -hitter when someone outside opened the dump valve. He made a seal with his butt cheeks and it evacuated his insides. Amazingly it did not kill him. The flew a dr out and pressed him in sat and he put what he could back in him.
After that the toilets and flush procedures were modified.

We usually patrolled at around 200 feet and 95% of the time it felt motionless.
Very rarely I felt the topside waves down to around 400 feet if they were bad enough.

“The experiments on the generation of such waves used a detailed topographic model of the Luzon Strait’s seafloor, mounted in a 50-foot-diameter rotating tank in Grenoble, France. They showed that internal waves are generated by the entire ridge system on that area of seafloor, and not a localized hotspot within the ridge.”
Can you imagine what would happen if an internal wave was passing over a sea ridge when there was an earth quake that causes a coincidence of the internal wave and say a drop of 9 feet of a tectonic plate simultaneously?
The resultant combined wave would doule o r triple the usual amplitude , and create a monster much higher on the surface than the largest waves we have measured which were 20 meter Tsunami waves, They could be more like 60 meter waves so tall that they would sweep away coastal features as if they were dust on the wind.
I have a whole new view of living on the coast, even living at 1000 feet above sea level might not be high enough to escape such a wave.Good thing I am not a pearl clutcher. The “sky is falling” crown have a lot more to worry about than “climate change.”
