FDA poised to ban menthol cigarettes this week, experts predict

The Food and Drug Administration appears likely to move to ban menthol in cigarettes this week — a step, experts say, that has been years in the making and that could have a significant positive impact on the health of Black Americans.

The FDA's decision would not ban menthol immediately, but rather kick off the rule-making process to do so, which could take years.

"The winds are definitely in our favor," said Delmonte Jefferson, executive director of the Center for Black Health & Equity, citing both the decades of data that show that the cooling flavor in cigarettes makes it easier to start smoking combined with the current cultural momentum toward improving the lives of Black Americans.

Other vulnerable groups might also benefit. LGBTQ communities also have higher rates of menthol tobacco use, as do adolescents.

Gee, this isn't too patronizing essentially saying, "You poor uneducated black Americans. It's a good thing we're here now to save you from your bad habit of smoking menthol cigarettes because you obviously don't know any better. We know it's not your fault. Oh, and that goes for you LGBTQ folks, too. It is such a good thing we're in control now before all of you do any more damage to yourselves. You poor dears."

More riots. More calls to 911 because their local shop doesn’t carry them anymore. I know a lot of blacks smoke menthol cigarettes. That’s all the black inmates smoked when I worked in Corrections.

76.8% of non-Hispanic black adults who smoked usually used menthol cigarettes, compared to 34.7% of Hispanic adults and 24.6% of white adults.

When I smoked I smoked menthols occasionally. Most of the time I smoked regulars, but occasionally I wanted menthols.

My start and quick end to smoking was with Parliment cigarettes that had a cotton filter tip. You have to be pretty darn old to remember them.
