I worked with a black engineer. He was politically active in his church. When we talked, he understood intellectually how bad the Democrats were for blacks. But I’d hear him on the phone in his cube talking about getting out the vote for Democratic candidates. Somehow, there was a disconnect in his brain between what he knew was true about Democrats, and, actually voting for more Democrats. I never understood that.
He was well educated and, due to being an army brat, spoke fluent German. But he was culturally trapped in a special purpose universe where he knew one thing, but somehow ignored it so he could help perpetuate it.

Both my grandfathers smoked cherry tobacco. I remember stealing swisher sweets at the drug store when I was five — they were conveniently in the same rack as the candy.

When I smoked, it was never menthol. That stuff tasted gross. In fact, when I decided to quit, I bought a pack of menthol so that when the cravings became too strong and I felt I had to light up, it was menthol that would quickly put me off. I quit in October, 1989, and have never had a relapse.
