Facing an income shortage from the loss of tourism due to COVID-19, Zimbabwe has announced it will soon start selling rights to shoot 500 endangered elephants this year.
“We eat what we kill. We have a budget of about $25 million for our operations which is raised — partly — through sports hunting, but you know tourism is as good as dead at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Tinashe Farawo, a spokesman for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, told CNN.
The African forest elephant is now on the critically endangered species list and the savannah elephant is classified as endangered.

Sounds like you’d prefer the park rangers be unfunded so the poachers can kill as many elephants as they want.
Hunters were the first conservationists. They have funded far more conservation projects than you . A certain percentage of a species dies every year whether hunted or not. Hunting in Africa funds the park rangers who protect the animals. Without that funding the poachers run wild.
But all you know is Bambi.
I once shared a row of seats on a plane with a guy who owned a safari company in Africa. He confirmed that countries who have legal, managed hunting have an abundance of elephants and other wildlife. Countries who have no hunting have massive problems with poachers.
He sort of implied that sometimes they take care of the poacher problems themselves.
Plus, a big game hunter doesn’t keep the meat. AN elephant can feed a village for a long time. That’s a good thing.
I’m surprised they haven’t been killed by the locals for food.
Go cry to Oprah
A triple win. The government gets money, locals get food and income, ISIS gets gored. (all poaching funds go to terrorism)
I’m concerned about motivation.
If elephants harassing towns are a problem in Zimbabwe, that’s a problem for the people themselves to fix. I don’t believe that rich Americans and Europeans are going there because they want to ‘do good’ for the people. They are going there for sport, with little understanding of the government they are helping to support.
And do you really believe that ONLY the ravaging old bulls will be culled?
I suspect that Zimbabwe will just take the money and look the other way, if some unfortunate ‘accident’ takes place with a viable animal.
(And I suppose you think it’s ‘ok’ to go there as a wealthy American, and ignore what’s been done to the white natives during land redistribution and ongoing violence against whites...)
The ChiComs must be lining up.
“They are going there for sport, with little understanding of the government they are helping to support.”
You sound like a Lib. Perhaps you’re on the wrong site. You might want to check out DU. Big Game Hunters are extremely well aware of the Politics and the dangers of where they plan to hunt. We research extensively the political situation and terrorism in the area and are warier of Politicians and Terrorism than the vast majority of people. Those factors are viewed as more dangerous than the wild game we plan to hunt.
The bottom line is, the money we spend benefits the local villages in ways that their own gov’t could or will never do. The animals culled are beyond breeding age so, there’s no threat to the breeding stock. And, the profits pay for anti-Poaching efforts. It is a win-win across the board. Whether you acknowledge it or not.
Communist savages killed or drove out their educated white farmers and now have to eat eat rock soup and dirt sandwiches. I say protect the elephants and let the Zimbabweans destroy themselves.
The media won’t tell you this part of the story. And money from groups hunting these prevent poaching, as these dollars are used for enforcement. And they don’t tell you about carrying capacity, and how these elephants are in areas where the habitat for them is at capacity.
> loss of tourism due to COVID-19
LOL??? And nothing to do with that little period of raping and burning white people? Were tourists really rushing back right before Covid?
No, I don’t acknowledge it. And I’m not concerned about YOUR danger, but about your potential influence.
You seem to be concerned with rich hunters’ own protection against the ‘politics and dangers’ of the country.
But when you are dealing with a government like that, you have no idea where your money is going , and for whom or what cause it actually aids - no matter how ‘safe’ you might be, while enjoying yourself.
Again, you seem to care about your own sport, protection and safety, with little respect for the possible ramifications of your actions to the country and people your ‘vanity’ convinces that you are ‘helping’.
Zimbabwe isn’t a place where I’d want to spend my own discretionary funds.
And the gov’t gets all the money! That was my whole point! The village remains primitive and the gov’t is enriched!
Exactly. This is the same with giraffes, you won’t be shooting a young one. People get all up in arms, no pun intended, about hunting these animals when it’s actually the humane thing to do.
Then don’t. You ignore the fact that we help the very poorest local villages and they welcome us with open arms and parties and great celebration when we arrive. The bush people are our guides on the hunt.
You ignore the fact that it funds anti-poaching efforts within the country. You have NO ACTUAL EXPERIENCE with this whatsoever.
What you have is a perception based on ignorance with No Actual Experience that you’re holding onto no matter what. As I said, you sound like a Lib. You might be more comfortable on DU.
Crazy stuff...
FMCDH(BITS)
I see it more as typical “ugly American” arrogance. There’s no shortage of that on all sides of the political fence.
Do you want to actually do something that might save the elephants from the CCP poachers who manage Chinese factories in Africa during the week and hire helicopter to shoot elephants and rhinos on weekends and send the ivory and horns home?
“I see it more as typical “ugly American” arrogance. There’s no shortage of that on all sides of the political fence.”
You must be an Old Fart. I haven’t heard the phrase “Ugly American” in many years. Since I was a kid. It was always uttered by Effete Euro Loving America Hating Libs.
