Facing an income shortage from the loss of tourism due to COVID-19, Zimbabwe has announced it will soon start selling rights to shoot 500 endangered elephants this year.
“We eat what we kill. We have a budget of about $25 million for our operations which is raised — partly — through sports hunting, but you know tourism is as good as dead at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Tinashe Farawo, a spokesman for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, told CNN.
The African forest elephant is now on the critically endangered species list and the savannah elephant is classified as endangered.

Can’t the money feed the village!
Elephants are pests that destroy the crops and habitats of some of the poorest people on Earth.
I like ‘em, too. But I can get my food at the supermarket, and the only thing that knocks over my shade trees are hurricanes.
Lockdowns destroy
“FYI, the elephants that are taken are old bulls.”
That probably represents 75% of Free Republic.
You obviously are uninformed on this subject or you would not ask such a question. So, let me educate you. Big Game Hunting is arranged via Safari Companies. Only. All else is Poaching. The $25K is just the charge for the Tag to take one Bull Elephant. The total cost of a Safari can easily exceed $50k. In many cases, the Hunters purchase Tags for multiple animals and the costs approach $500K.
The profits from these Safari’s go to pay locals to track Poachers and jail them. The meat from the kills is given to the local villagers. I have been on Safari. I speak from experience.
The locals can render one down faster than cholos stripping a car in east LA.
I am just asking: what’s the sport in hunting an old elephant?
Oh just shut up.
L
LMAO. Now, this is funny as hell!!
Where did you get your degree in wildlife management?
From a Cracker Jacks box?
Old elephants that are going to die anyway. Make money from them, feed the village, intelligent method of economic reality.
What does elephant taste like? Chicken?
...............................................
Tastes more like Bald Eagle.
Well said.
“What does elephant taste like? Chicken?”
And the drumsticks are massive, but they’re a b*tch to deep fry.
The thrill of the hunt. These old bulls are very dangerous. They are huge and ill-tempered. Their eyesight is fading but, their hearing and sense of smell are still very good. And, they will charge you without hesitation. Additionally, the older bulls hang together in groups for protection against Lions. They are not like an elderly human with a walker by any means. They are a dangerous hunt.
Bows are quiet. Just sayin’.
Probably not a good idea in these woke times we live in. Anyone recall what happened to that dentist who shot some beloved lion. The wokeratti did their best to make his life a living hell. Don’t agree with the woke of course but that is the lay of the land these days.
I also have been on safari. Until I read your post. I was going to post the same info.
Unfortunately, you and I are attempting to use logic to fight stupidity. I cannot call it ignorance, because the facts are there.
I hope you had a great time on your safari. I know I did and am thinking about possibly next year.
Elephants? Not interested. Lying, left wing pols? That might be interesting. Unfortunately, I don’t have a gun and I don’t hunt. Broke, too.
