SC House Panel Calls for US Constitutional Convention

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A House committee approved a bill Tuesday that would add South Carolina to a list of states calling for a convention to propose amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

The 14-8 vote in the House Judiciary Committee came after arguments from Black lawmakers who fear the open-ended process never used since the Constitution's ratification in 1788 could remove amendments that ended slavery and secured African American voting rights and citizenship.

A conservative lawmaker suggested religious protections and gun rights could be at stake.

The bill would allow South Carolina to join calls for a constitutional convention, limiting the items that could be taken up to spending checks on the federal government, limiting the federal government's jurisdiction and power, and setting term limits for Congress.

About 15 states have passed similar resolutions, and the Constitution requires two-thirds of states, or 34, to call for the convention.

Supporters point out whatever amendments are suggested by the convention would have to be passed by three-fourths of the states — 38 legislatures or special conventions.

SO you take a constitution that was written by by a bunch of wise and generally moral people. Then you open it up to a bunch of communists, socialists, and ignorant Americans.

What could go wrong.

We are at a moment of peak insanity (wokeness). It is the most dangerous possible time to open the Constitution to modification. Would have wanted a Convention in 1967? Or wait until 1981. We need a good decade to get out of this mess.

Because Congress has the same proposal rights as a Convention of the States, the Constitution is open to that every day that Congress is in session.

Post #23. The Constitution is open to amendment every day that Congress meets.

No they wouldn’t but I believe the congress we currently have will do it leaving the citizens with only one option.

...I am scared to death of a new Constitutional Convention ...

I'm scared to death of what we have NOW. We have one person and one person only keeping the Filabuster alive: Senator Synema of Arizona. That is the only thing between the last remaining checks and balances and permanent RAT rule . At the very least as America approached that magic 34 state thershold it would ignite a debate among Americans as to what the Constitution should actually do. I think the good guys will win that debate because they happen to be right .

First, you would need two thirds of the House and two thirds of the Senate to get an amendment proposal that would repeal the 2nd Amendment sent to the states for ratification.

Second, you would need three fourths of the states to ratify it.

It won't happen.

Thanks. From the article, conservatives fear marxist takeover of a COS, while blacks fear the return of slavery. LOL.

Meanwhile, today the scotus, Nanzi, Chuckie and Obiden work to fundamentally overturn American society and government. All without a COS.

Sovereignty. Use it or lose it.

New states may only be admitted by two thirds of the states voting for approval.

What for???

Unless it is to remove the 16th & 17th & 19th & the 20th modified...

Otherwise it is a total waste of time that will be dominated by Soros funded politicians... Sayonara to the Constitution altogether...

I'm with you all the way regarding the 16th and 17th Amendments (surprising, I know). You're not going to take the right to vote away from women. What's wrong with the 20th Amendment? I didn't know anybody wanted Inauguration Day returned to March 4.

I don't know... The stinking lawyers in DC won't obey the laws on the books now.. How can we be so sure they would follow new ones.. It seems anytime they don't like a law, they just ignore it..

Something must be done about how he federal government is financed. They shouldn’t be able to spend any more then they brought in the previous year. That and all legislation should be stand alone. No more of this bundling it all together. These two things would go a long way to ensuring our continued existence.

It can get worse, but not by an Article V Convention. An Article V Convention can only propose amendments, it can not enact anything. Three-fourths (38) of the States must ratify a proposed amendment for it to become part of the Constitution, whether the proposal is by Congress or a convention.
