Florida governor signs "anti-rioting, pro-law enforcement" bill into law amid nationwide protests

Florida has adopted a law that its governor calls the "strongest anti-rioting, pro-law enforcement measure in the country" but that critics say infringes on First Amendment rights. The controversial legislation was signed as the nation awaits a verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd, which sparked nationwide unrest.

The Combating Public Disorder bill, signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday, was written in response to mass protests against police brutality. While the vast majority of protests remained peaceful, the law seeks to crack down on rioters.

The law brings new protections for police officers and puts "an end to the bullying and intimidation tactics of the radical left," DeSantis said. It allows for an appeal if a municipality tries to reduce its police budget.

It also allows authorities to hold arrested protesters until a first court appearance — preventing them from immediately posting bail. It enhances the penalties for damaging property and other forms of violence during protests, and creates new crimes for "mob intimidation" and doxing.

Violators could now face up to 10 years in prison for damaging memorials or historic structures, such as Confederate monuments.

"Rights have limits, and violence is where the line is drawn," said Republican Senator Danny Burgess, who carried the bill in the Senate. "This bill is about preventing violence."

“Critics say”. Ah yes those ubiquitous critics. They are everywhere..... well actually they are the handful of loonies and the criminals we call “journalists”.

If you come to florida to riot we will shoot you.

Seems pretty fair minded. I Love our Gov. DeSantis Clause!

He signed it in Winter Haven. I work in Winter Haven, he got to hang out with Grady. He is the best sheriff ever. He don’t play around. He said if someone breaks into your house blow them back out the door. He won’t put up with any rioting. Will have it shut down real quick.

My worst fear is that Scott Walker (R, WI) and Ron DeSantis (R, FL) run against one another for President in the future.

I would have a really hard time choosing. As much as I like Governor Walker, DeSantis hits ALL my buttons.

A DeSantis/Walker ticket would be awesome, after another four years of President Trump, of course! :)

Rioting, looting, and destruction of other’s property is not protest. It should not be treated as such. Bring in the Korean rooftop businessmen if need be, but shut down the riots with force. No regrets.

Every red state needs to do this.

And also how about making Florida a 2nd amendment sanctuary state?

If you come to florida to riot we will shoot you.

And if the threatened citizen misses - we will put your ass in jail... no bond until a judge has seen you.

I am moving to Florida in mid-June. I can’t wait to get there, and put NJ in my rearview mirror.

And apparently Democrats and the Left are opposed to it.

Translation ..... they were planning something and he’s beating to the proverbial punch. If only there were about 20 something g more Governors like him, especially here in Georgia. Harris and CornPop would be struggling.

Come on down, the water is warm. Conservative NJ folks only welcome in FL. Plenty of fellow Freepers down here. Generally beautiful weather year around and we are FREE! Home of Trump, DeSantis, and many unabashed conservatives. See my tagline.

What's so controversial about it? They can still protest and make some noise, as long as they behave themselves and don't assault others or break their stuff. The REAL issue is the true motivations of those who find the bill so "controversial".
Also, the unions representing health care workers, for all their talk about social distancing wholeheartedly support the riots mostly peaceful protests. But they still have problems with Churches, synagogues, mosques, Bhuddidt temples, etc holding PEACEFUL services.

YES! Can’t wait to live there! Can DeSantis give leadership seminars to other Republican governors and get everyone on the same law abiding, conservative governing page?

Correct. All rights have limits.
There is no right to “protest”. There is a right to peacefully assemble for the redress of grievances, but *NO* right to close down a road, attack or break into a building, or otherwise disrupt things; those who do should be shot on the spot, I don’t care if they are “protesting” for things I agree with.

No one, ever, is going to have in issue important enough to slow me down in traffic.

I was down in December, January and April scouting locations. I’ll be starting out the first year in Fort Myers. Can’t wait, only 56 days to move-out day.
