And I am talking about low skill levels too.

But on all counts it is happening across the employment spectrum, which is largely due to the unemployment stimulus right now.

Even the employed are playing the sytem to the mas, with all the family leave mandates people are taking off weeks due to the death of their husband's sisters, nieces friends uncle who was an illegal alien, RIP.

Well those who want to make money will take that unless there’s a better offer and open position that’s better. Or they’ll sit in their moms basement.

The hospitality/retail Industry is fast turnover and why they advertize open positions all the time even when they don’t need help at the moment. People learn pretty quickly unless they advance to management the only way to get more money is change Companies. Then you can actually negotiate your pay even though they have a ‘set’ pay scale.......
I did so and actually was paid more than the manager.....because of the successful skills I brought to the table..and knew how to negotiate. Corporate will pay more if you’re bringing something to the table and can prove you’re of value, and the HR person is wise enough to spot good help.

In the service I Felt the same way. I may have to do someone else’s job if they couldn’t. In the civilian world everyone was a number. And in the union it was last in and first out. Just another brick in the wall.. .

Their is definitely an older out of touch group on this site that doesn’t realize how much damage corporations have caused with their wage suppression policies.

Trump was fixing the economy and letting wages rise naturally via supply and demand.

Now were headed back to unlimited supply of cheap labor.

But they will find a way to blame the workers for their plight.

This may be the reason why Free Republic never really gets the younger crowd. The out-of-touch-ness is embarrassing.

Local Healthcare employer told their aides and techs that they were not raising wages but instead were going to the world markets for labor.

This is why the border is open.

You cannot imagine what it is like being ill and being cared for by some third world standard.

Skilled Americans are the next unskilled high school dropouts.

Indians will work for a 1/3 to 1/4 of what American wages used to be in skilled white-collar jobs, and Mexicans the same with skilled blue-collar jobs.

Americans can’t work for 25% to 33% of what they used to make.

The Philippines used to send lots of Board Certified Nurses to the US.

After Trump’s deal with Modi last year, Indian nurses will be coming to the US instead of Filipinas.

No offense, but they can if they understand they have too. If Indians and Mexicans can work for that amount so can Americans. It is a matter of attitude and that attitude hurt our nation back under Bush.

Yet it’s increasingly common to hear politicians, CEOs, and immigration activists impugn American workers as a bunch of shiftless layabouts who regard many good jobs as beneath their dignity. That, they say, is why employers have to turn to immigrants—some of them legal, many of them illegal. To hear CEOs tell it, they’d much rather hire English-speaking, tax-paying U.S. citizens, people who won’t disrupt operations by getting rounded up in Homeland Security sweeps. But they just can’t find any Americans willing to do their jobs. As President Bush himself said last March, the United States needs a temporary guest-worker program that would “match willing foreign workers with willing American employers to fill jobs that Americans will not do.”

What are these jobs that Americans will not do? Do they exist? Or are they a figment of the business community’s imagination? It turns out that their claims are largely true—there are plenty of jobs Americans avoid. Let’s take a tour of them. Americans shun pretty much any unskilled labor that requires them to get their hands dirty: landscaping, entry-level construction, picking fruits and vegetables (Reuters report s that “up to 70 percent of U.S. farm workers are estimated to be undocumented, totaling about 500,000 people”), cleaning hotel rooms, busing tables, and prep cooking in urban restaurants.

But the refusal to do jobs is moving up the value chain. American workers appear to be less interested in some kinds of factory jobs. The Washington Post, for example, recently reported that Georgia’s carpet factories are increasingly dominated by Mexican immigrant workers.

Americans, it seems, are also less willing to take stressful jobs that require lots of training and long hours, and that require them to work in unpleasant environments. For example, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing is warning of a nursing shortage. This survey from the American Hospital Association says there are 118,000 nursing vacancies in the United States. Meanwhile, a 2003 report by the Council on Graduate Medical Education suggested there could be a shortage of anywhere from 65,000 to 150,000 doctors in 2020. (Given the time it takes to educate and train a physician, it’s not too soon to worry.)

The United States is a nation of hard workers. Compared with many other developed countries, the U.S. boasts high rates of labor-force participation and productivity and has a very low unemployment rate. Americans work longer hours than Europeans—1,804 hours per worker for the United States in 2005, compared to 1,434 in Germany and 1,535 in France, according to the OECD.

Spending your days tethered to a computer is also work that many Americans avoid. The Information Technology Association of America notes that 77 percent of companies it polled said there was a shortage of qualified IT talent in the United States. The solution: Import more geeks. The ITAA (and pretty much every technology company) supports boosting the number of H-1B visas above the current limit of 65,000 per fiscal year.

The more one looks, the more shortages of willing workers appear. Bryan Bender of the Boston Globe last month reported that the Pentagon is “considering expanding the number of noncitizens in the ranks—including disputed proposals to open recruiting stations overseas and putting more immigrants on a faster track to U.S. citizenship if they volunteer.” Today, about 2 percent of the soldiers protecting America—about 30,000—aren’t technically Americans. On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported on a dire shortage of professors of accounting, finance, and management that may cause some schools to curtail course offerings. “AACSB International, the accrediting organization for business schools, estimates a shortage of 1,000 Ph.D.s in the U.S. this year that will grow to 2,400 by 2012.” (Apparently, American citizens with Ph.D.s in accounting, finance, and management can get high-paying, satisfying jobs in the private sector. Who knew?)

Even Slate blames the CEO’s, but since I’ve heard this argument now for decades and minimum wage has gone up overtime(I started at $2.50 per hour). The less and less I have come to agree that it is a wage issue and more that it is indeed an attitude issue. Raising the minimum wage changes very little in the labor market if people refuse certain jobs. In fact, I believe it has contributed to the problem, not solved it.

It is called the labor market for a reason as Slate clearly states. But the market works both ways for the CEO and for the job seeker. When one chooses to work in a field where the wage rate is going down, one either needs to add value to their proposition for the available job or grasp that the wage rate for a particular skill is falling for whatever reason. As we are watching shifts in the lower end of the service industry, workers were replaced by immigrants in 2007, now in McDonalds the counter worker is replaced by a kiosk, and even Amazon will be replacing workers with Artificial Intelligence in the next 5 years. Raising minimum wage will do little to help these workers as they are far less likely to take landscaping jobs or ‘dirty jobs.’ and they will find if they become reskilled in technology they will compete with the Indian immigrants for your job.

The market shift is downward on wages caused not only by immigration, but also by increases to the minimum wage. Forcing companies on the lower end to pay more will only cause things to get worse, as those employers will be the first to innovate away from having employees at all. As the Great Reset continues to steam forward, they anticipate this shift will cause a 50% unemployment rate for about 10 years. This is why nearly every country is looking into a Universal Basic Income and paying for it through a robot tax (Bill Gates) of the jobs that have been eliminated. There is a reason politicians for the past 2 decades have been encouraging people into learning to code and computer skills, it is because their very jobs will be eliminated. This means there is a glut on the IT market for employees and that translates to lower wages and better skilled workforce. And those jobs will go to those ‘willing to work.’

So...I know many here won’t like this little screed, but it is the future and it is arriving quickly. The question is now that some of this is laid bare and the rose tint on the glasses has been rubbed off, I ask you a very common interview question:

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

You seriously think Americans should accept wages as low as the Indian scumbags are willing to work?

Let’s all live 6 to a room as they do as well?

Yeah we should all work for $30/ hr in white collar jobs in the Bay Area and $15 to $20/ hr elsewhere. Some of the Indian recruiters are going that low already for positions that used to get $50/hr plus a few years ago before the Indian invasion. $32 an hour for jobs requiring a decade of solid experience.

$5 to $10/ hr in blue-collar jobs, right? That’s what illegals are willing to work for.

Or better yet, how about at the same wages as Indians in India? Or Mexicans in Mexico?

Take your anti-American worker garbage and post it on DU, oh wait, you did just post something here from the far-left Slate.

How about you try surviving on wages you expect the American worker to survive on first for even 3 months.

I am sorry your job market is falling in wages, but complaining about it isn’t going to change things. And that is a very real fact.

Coming to terms with it will help you move forward. Your job market has collapsed...just like the author from Slate said it would.
