It keeps people busy and a feeling that they are doing something to help, but the seatbelt is no match for the rapid acceleration when you hit, though there is an extremely slim chance that it might, but almost certainly won’t, make a difference.

Seatbelts are to keep you from being slammed against the ceiling in heavy turbulence, and masks are for robbing banks.

Mask on for indoor crowded places, mask off for outdoor activities. I don’t mind wearing masks on planes being cramped in and all and usually some idiots will sneeze into the air without covering their nose and mouths. Viruses travel on the tiny droplets from sneezing and coughing. Plus the air in the cabins is often very dry and if the nasal passages get dry too they are subject to greater attacks from viral bugs. Just one of many reasons why flying commercial sucks.
