Why? Even with dementia, he’ll still be smarter than the animals.

I loved watching him.

How do they diagnose ‘Alzheimer’s’, anyway?

I remember talking with a doctor back in the early 1990s about the fact that every case of senile dementia was being called ‘Alzheimer’s’. He was uncomfortable with it, too.

See what happens when there is no political agenda and the family loves that person?

What you do is enjoy them and make them happy until the end.

I think it can only be definitively diagnosed by autopsy.

Whatever the cause, dementia is horrific.

I’m sitting with a Alzheimer’s patient right now. I work part time as a caregiver. My understanding is that the disease can only be confirmed posthumously by examination of the brain. I guess doctors take an educated guess based on age and symptoms, and after ruling out other causes.

Wow, he’s only 74. I remember watching him come on the Johnny Carson show.

Oh how sad! Always loved watching him. Always enthusiastic to the enth degree and full of mischief. I do not understand where this dementia comes from or what causes it. You look at him and it’s obvious his mind was extremely active; highly intelligent. I don’t get it.

A variety of novel imaging procedures — not available everywhere — can diagnose it and provide a differential diagnosis vs. lewy body, etc.

Wow, he’s only 74

A gentle correction if I might. The article says he was 76.

I always heard it cannot be definitely diagnosed until the brain is autopsied. I am sure he has had all kinds of tests but one cause of dementia is low B12 level

We’re trying high dose niacinamide and gingko/vinpocetine with a family member with dementia. As I understand it, 2500-3000 mg/day niacin offers significant improvement for the condition.

I’ve had two relatives with dementia and one with Alzheimers. Alzheimers is worse.

Sadly autopsies, which are the best learning and teaching tool for physicians, are rarely performed these days. There are many reasons. Dementia is rarely verifiably diagnosed.

That’s really going mega. I used to give the late Mrs. C 500 mg of niacinimide every day for MS-related leg drop, anything beyond that was more than her body could handle. If there aren’t any side effects, you’re lucky.
