Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., died Tuesday after a more than two-year bout with pancreatic cancer, NBC News confirmed.
Hastings, who served in the House for nearly three decades, was 84. Throughout his career, he held several key committee assignments and leadership positions, most recently as vice chairman of the Rules Committee.
After the congressman’s death, Democrats hold a narrow 218-211 advantage in the House, giving the party a small margin for error in passing legislation. Six seats are vacant.
Hastings, a former federal district court judge, was impeached in 1988 amid accusations of bribery and perjury. The Senate voted to remove him from the bench the next year, but did not vote to disqualify him from holding future office.

Louisiana 5th and Louisiana 2nd have been held with the GOP and the Democrats each taking one. Texas 6th is red while the New Mexico 1st, Florida 20th and Ohio 11th are pretty solid blue. Interestingly enough the special for the Ohio 11th is next November.
Now if some of the ancient senators would give up the ghost perhaps we could get somewhere. Strange how covid didn't get any of them.
Will the vacancies be filled by appointment or special election? States handle issues like that differently.
“After the congressman’s death, Democrats hold a narrow 218-211”
Wikipedia has it 218-212...makes a difference at this point.
Can anyone tell us about his FL district. Is it a D lock ? ....or maybe up in the air now ?
Super-duper Dem lock.
6 vacancies as said. 4 are in Dem districts (Cedric Richmond-LA; Fudge-OH; Haaland-NM; Hastings-FL), 2 in GOP districts (Letlow-LA; Wright-TX). The Letlow seat special has already occurred, won by the widow, but she apparently has yet to be sworn in despite the election having taken place 17 days ago back on March 20th. So this should technically be 5 vacancies with a member-elect not having been sworn-in.
Of the Dem seats, only the Haaland one in NM has the most remote chance of a Republican winning in a special. The other 3 are Black Voting Rights Act districts gerrymandered for a Black Dem.
I could be wrong, but I thought he was a federal judge appointed by Carter.
Perfect. LOL
How fitting that a corrupt judge spends the rest of his life in Congress.
Interesting. Do you how the mechanics of that work? Do they make that determination when they write the Articles of Impeachment? Or is it a separate vote after conviction, not unlike how the Death Penalty is applied in many states, a post-conviction hearing.
A trifecta so far...Cummings, Lewis, Hastings. Trying for # 4...come on Clyburn! Then run the table...Rush, Lee, Waters etc.
Is it saying something bad of the dead to point out Hastings was an Impeached and CONVICTED federal judge?
Then went on to his community, ran for Congress, and told the Homies he was set up by “Da Man” so they voted for him in droves?
Apparently, his Senate trial was conducted by a committee, rather than the full Senate. No explanation on the Senate’s website or wikipedia about him not being disqualified...
My mother told me never to speak ill of the dead.
My mother also told me to always speak the truth.
My God have mercy on the crooked Alcee Hastings immortal soul.

Good information. Thanks.
As if he won’t be replaced by another Democrat.
Really slim majority, no wonder Piglosi trying to steal Iowa seat
