The man accused of trying to extort $25 million from Rep. Matt Gaetz’s family admitted Monday that he asked the congressman’s dad for cash — but denied that it was a shakedown.
Bob Kent, an ex-Air Force intelligence officer, confirmed to Sirius Radio host Michael Smerconish that he approached the Florida Republican’s dad, Don Gaetz, for money last month.
The funds, Kent said, were to pay for an effort to free Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent who disappeared in Iran in 2007, and is believed to be dead. Kent claimed he has video evidence that Levinson is still alive and is being held hostage.
Kent said he met Don Gaetz, a wealthy former Florida politician, at his office on March 17 — and told him his son was having “legal issues” and might want to “generate good will” by helping with the rescue effort.
“I explained that in no way am I trying to extort him and that if he decides not to help us, he’ll never hear from me again,” Kent told Smerconish.
“Matt Gaetz is in need of good publicity, and I’m in need of $25 million to save Robert Levinson,” he added.
Kent insisted that his intention wasn’t to blackmail the Gaetz family.
“I never threatened the man — matter of fact, it was the opposite: I told him if he decides not to help us he’ll never hear from me again,” Kent said, adding, “I can’t help how it sounds.”

It’s unclear how Kent and his cohorts knew that Matt Gaetz, 38, was under investigation by the Department of Justice.
He gave the bank teller a note demanding cash, but it wasn’t a robbery or anything.
well alrighty then, the plot thickens.. /s
The IC has six ways from Sunday to screw one over...
FBI, always the FBI these days.
“I didn’t tell my date she had to sleep with me. I just told her that she needed a ride back into town and I needed to release some stress.”
“I didn’t threaten to hurt the man. I just told him I needed some cash and I had a gun.”
Dirty Department Of Justice
If the chump has to specifically deny it’s extortion, I am sure it’s probably extortion. 👎
How about: “That’s a real nice looking family you got there. Would be a shame if something bad happened to any of them. I don’t mean anything by that. I’m just saying it would be a shame.
He was just asking for a charitable donation.
Hey Kent: If you are really trying to do what you say, Open a GoFundMe account, publish the video to convince donors, and send out letters to all the rich people asking for donations.
Don’t walk up to a guy and tell him you want him to pay it all himself, and oh, by the way, I just happen to have some dirt on your son.
What are the odds that this guy has a friend, cousin, or girlfriend who works for the FBI or Justice Department?
Give me $25 million. I’ll give you great publicity.
It sounds like both men are in trouble.
I’m sure that this can all be cleared up once the FBI releases the recordings they are in the process of loosing at this very moment.
You mean like a former Federal prosecutor?
Just a coincidence that a retired Air Force Officer just happens to have DOJ inside information about Gaetz being under investigation at the time he is asking dad for $25M.
"Nice political career your son has going there. Be a shame if anything happened to him".
If he tried such a move against a democrat, the FBI would have visited his house at 0400 and frog marched him in front of CNN.
After multiple FOIA requests and several lawsuits Judicial Watch will get those recordings ... in 2035.
Disclaimer: No criticism of Judicial Watch intended in that remark.
I’m sorry to make this analogy, but it’s similar to Gaetz who said “I had a history of being very generous to my ex girlfriends and it sounds like somebody tried to make something untoward out of that”.
We’re living in a corrupt society where we barely know 10% of what’s going on.
