On 28 January, a young man in a red hoodie snatched a pistol from a man openly carrying it, in Detroit, Michigan. The robbery occurred in the BP gas station at Seven Mile and Wyoming Ave. A confederate held the store door open. It was unclear if there was another confederate in the getaway vehicle. The getaway vehicle did not have a rear license plate.

The man openly carrying the pistol was identified as being 53 years old. The surveillance video, released on 20 February, reportedly by the Detroit Police Department, shows the snatch. The open carry victim is busy at the counter with his wallet in his hand.
It appears the crime was not a crime of opportunity, but was planned. The perpetrator in the red hoodie does not have to discern the pistol and make a decision. The snatch is done as soon as the pistol is seen. The perpetrator appears to know what is available and what he is going to do.
The pistol appears to be in a simple clip-on holster, which is merely clipped to a pocket. There does not appear to be any retention strap. The image of the black pistol, in a black holster against black pants makes resolution of the details difficult.Screenshot of image from video surveillance released by the police, cropped and scaled by Dean Weingarten
Some early accounts indicated the thief pointed the stolen gun at the owner. That is incorrect. The gun pointed at the owner is a different gun with an extended magazine. The thief was prepared for the robbery in advance.

Open carry should be reserved for active civil unrest scenarios where you have buddies with you and will not allow non-trusted people to get close enough to make a grab."
That why I make it standard practice to shoot everyone inside the QwikMart before I go in.....Never can be too sure.......It also cuts down on waiting.....š
Any time you mess with somebody with a firearm, you run the risk of being shot.
The guy turns to the left to get a pack of chips just as the grab is attempted. He sees whatās going on and draws and shoots.

LMFAO!!!
Damn!

Iām not so sure it was carefully planned or planned at all.......Iām mean how long does one go into a gas station for?
This was a crime of opportunity.
Right.
You cannot see the pistol, until you get inside the store.
But you know it is there and snatch it as soon as you see it.
You are illegally carrying a pistol with an extended mag to make sure of your gettaway.
Your confederate holds the door open for you, the whole time.
Your getaway car has the rear license plate removed.
Yes, clearly a crime of opportunity/S.
That is worse than the movies about aliens.
I have been strongly considering open carrying my wallet. /sarc
Open carry is a bad idea. Your gun should come as a nasty surprise to the bad guys.
If I ever have to draw my revolver in public, I want it to be a surprise for everyone in the vicinity.
Iām retired from Detroit Fire, EMS Division.
I know a thing or two because Iāve seen a thing or two. LOL
The perps were probably lying in wait for what ever came their way.
Their plan was to score anything āgoodā. They may have been selling crack even and waiting for something to come along.
It would shock you how many missing license plates there are with vehicles cruising around.
Gas Stations and Coney Island restaurants are bad places to go unless youāre known in the hood.
The carrier’s situational awareness was..
less than ideal.
If you are going to open carry, don’t think that just the sight of the firearm will discourage a bold thief. Be acutely aware of the proximity and possible intent of everyone within 20 feet of you.
As much as I loathe thieves, this open carrier earned this lesson, though nobody deserves to be robbed.
I look at that picture and I keep thinking, “There’s just no way that I would allow someone that close to me with my back to them”
Concealed and open carry are become irrelevant if one lacks situational awareness
I would never open carry. Not only can someone steal the gun as shown here, but I don't want perps to know I am one of the armed guys who needs to be taken out first.
A while back there was a argument here on FR about open carry, and my position was that a weapon could be easily taken away from you. Those opposing said there’s no record of such a thing. Well geeeeez whiz. Looky here.
With exception to my concealed holsters, all of them have a flap covering the weapon like a military holster does/used to. The idea here is to keep it where it belongs when I’m out in the woods and to keep it clean. Such a holster would also restrict stealing it.
These new holsters to me are just ridiculous. I acquired a used pistol a few years back with one of those cheezy plastic belt type holsters. The weapon fit perfectly. And it could be easily removed - by me - by a thief - or by any object in the woods capable of snagging the weapon.
“
If the former, then also do the latter.
Where I live it is practically impossible to get a concealed carry license.
