Suez Canal ship freed: Everything you need to know about the Ever Given drama

The Ever Given was stuck for nearly a week, but now traffic can resume on the Suez Canal.

You'll notice "Evergreen" is written across the Ever Given's body, but confusingly, that's branding for the Taiwanese company that operates the ship. Julianne Cona/Instagram

After nearly six days lodged aground in the Suez Canal, the cargo ship Ever Given was finally freed Monday, according to CNBC and ship tracker Vessel Finder. Traffic in the waterway can now resume, the canal authority told Reuters.

The Suez Canal is one of the world's most important waterways. Located 75 miles east of Cairo, the capital of Egypt, it links the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, allowing for direct shipping from Europe to Asia. Roughly 12% of the world's shipping traffic and a chunk of its oil supply goes through the manmade canal, which has become particularly vital following pandemic-related disruptions to shipping.

Egyptian TV footage showed the ship aligned in a straight position along the canal, as previously reported by the BBC.

No, they got lucky - mostly with the tides and that their local equipment was able to excavate most of the bow. Their canal authority was saying that they were not at all sure they would be able to and had sent for salvage companies to come and offload the ship.

Super tug escorts for the big ones. Their transit fees will increase.

“they got lucky - mostly with the tides”

SuperMoon SuperTide.

Going to mosque on Friday paid off after all...

Lesson learned by the Chinese, from their rehearsal...

- dredge the canal

The canal can already handle ships with a draft up to 66 feet and 240,000 tons deadweight. Both can handle the Ever Given easily.

- dig a second canal (Israel plan?)

Israel going to pay for it?

- harden the sides to prevent running aground

You can harden the banks all you want but I suspect that if you still hit them with a 220,000 ton ship they're going to break.

Full Moon on the 28th on MY calendar. They had a graph of the tides projecting about a week ahead...big difference in the next week.

My bro is a retired sea Captain. We always had great conversations about loading and unloading and fire fighting and keeping watch. Our professions are connected.

That’s a violation of the Geneva Convention.

Just asking for a friend, but isn’t it interesting all of the shipping held up in that area. Nice sitting targets. What appears to me is that this would be an excellent training opportunity for war theory training. Say a carrier group needed to get from here to there quickly. Oh man the suez canal or Panama canal just got blocked. How many days would be lost in transit? How many friendly war vessels could be taken out by a Wolfpack scenario? Inquiring minds just inquiring.

Evergreen is the shipping line

Way back in the early 80s, CNN had a weekly half-hour show of news from Japan which was sponsored by Evergreen, and being a Nihonophile I watched it religiously. I never checked, but assumed at the time that it was a Japan-based shipping firm.

I was gonna post that, and thought “Nah, leave the opening for dfwgator” (true story).

Well done.

Though, admittedly I expected:

Actually he played the German General von Roon in The Winds of War/War And Remembrance, so it's really weird seeing him in Top Secret! after watching those.
