Suez Canal ship freed: Everything you need to know about the Ever Given drama

The Ever Given was stuck for nearly a week, but now traffic can resume on the Suez Canal.

You'll notice "Evergreen" is written across the Ever Given's body, but confusingly, that's branding for the Taiwanese company that operates the ship. Julianne Cona/Instagram

After nearly six days lodged aground in the Suez Canal, the cargo ship Ever Given was finally freed Monday, according to CNBC and ship tracker Vessel Finder. Traffic in the waterway can now resume, the canal authority told Reuters.

The Suez Canal is one of the world's most important waterways. Located 75 miles east of Cairo, the capital of Egypt, it links the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, allowing for direct shipping from Europe to Asia. Roughly 12% of the world's shipping traffic and a chunk of its oil supply goes through the manmade canal, which has become particularly vital following pandemic-related disruptions to shipping.

Egyptian TV footage showed the ship aligned in a straight position along the canal, as previously reported by the BBC.

Excerpted because it's a long article with many embedded graphics - and I don't have time to post it all.

They got lucky that they were able to float it off.

Evergreen is the shipping line, the Ever Given is the ship name.

“You’ll notice “Evergreen” is written across the Ever Given’s body, but confusingly, that’s branding for the Taiwanese company that operates the ship.”

I guess ignorant journalists, and I repeat myself, don’t know ship names are on the back not the side of a ship.

There are pictures out there with the name written on the bow as well.

In this case, it’s also on the bow - but yeah, the formal place for the ship name is on the back.

article:“The Suez Canal is one of the world's most important waterways …”

Oh, you mean the canal designed and built by white colonial visionaries? Oh, that's right—all canals were built by white colonial visionaries.

To be fair, the Panama Canal was finished after the US decided we didn’t want to be a colonial power, because running colonies sucks. :P

I wonder if there will now be a push to:

- dredge the canal
- dig a second canal (Israel plan?)
- harden the sides to prevent running aground

The canal is constantly being dredged to keep it open.

Egypt has been improving and expanding the canal slowly but steadily over the past couple decades. There are now bypasses and second channels in parts of the canal - this wasn’t one of them, though.

The problem is the sides are made of packed rubble and sand. Also, hardening the sides means that if a ship does hit it, it’s likely to be ripped open and sink in the canal. Even the Panama Canal doesn’t have hardened banks outside the lock areas - as one of our Zumwalt class destroyers found out when it ran aground and got stuck. A ship aground but still water-tight ship is infinitely preferable to one that sank in the channel blocking access.

This is proof that the Suez Canal Authority needs to build parallel canals all the way from Port Said to Suez. Maybe the shipping companies should chip in for the upgrade cost?

They were already working on that. However, building a canal in the desert is neither easy nor cheap.

That wasn't look. A few Engineers put their heads together and figured out the best course.

Good job!!

They did get lucky with the high tides which were only available for about a week.
