To be fair, the Panama Canal was finished after the US decided we didn’t want to be a colonial power, because running colonies sucks. :P

That picture finally prompted me to go look up the origin of one of my favorite lines/quotes. “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
Some to Orwell, some to Churchill, some to Marcus Aurelius, some to Kipling. Not a big fan of Kipling but the others for sure. Was interesting to find Orwell on the list he was in some ways a genius.
